looking for a 3 book series "midieval fantasy" about a boy who goes on an adventure and returns a man

I read this many years ago. Back in 1990 or 1992. I do not have much to go on as far as details are concerned. What I do remember of this 3 part book series is that this young teenage boy who lives in this town, resides in a loft above either his parents or his Master of craft which is Black Smith If I remember correctly. Then something happens at the town and he ends up going away with someone important and either becoming this important persons Squire or helper. They go away and start the adventure and he eventually returns to his town all grown up and possibly a hero. I wish I could remember more like names and specific events but I have slept since then.
