If it was a teenage girl, might be 'The Universe Between' by Alan Nourse.

This is it! I just downloaded the book to Kindle and it talks about absolute zero which is another thing in the book that I totally forgot about. Thanks a million!

The defining characteristic of the story is that a child discovers that he/she can turn their body at a certain angle and enter a parallel or alternate universe. I can't remember if you needed to go to a particular spot and turn, or whether you could just do it wherever you happened to be.
