Dystopian - forehead gem - mind control 1970s-80s

For some reason I think title might include night hawk or hawk night
Dystopian - setting vaguely European, in future but they have swords etc bc society regressed
Main character has a gem/crystal on forehead
He has amnesia
The crystal / gem allows someone else to control him with magic (or futuristic tech?) and see what he sees so he keeps it covered
Possibly part of a series?

That's what I was thinking too. Main character is called Hawkmoon?
If not specifically Jewell in the Skull there are other books from the series you could be thinking of.
