Shari | 500 comments Good morning. I need to have my books assigned. Under message #199. I've completed my first book and have started reading the second book on my list.

Also, if someone could please tell me how to put a check mark into my message to show I've read the book, that would be awesome! I've tried to figure it out without having any luck. Thanks.

Shari, I use the check mark emoji available in iOS - iPad and iPhone standard keyboard/keypad. If you can’t find it, you can copy-paste the emoji from my comment and paste it in your post. You will need to edit your post to paste the emoji wherever you want it. Pasting a few variants of the check mark emoji down below for you to choose your favourite and copy:

ASSIGNED - 4. Distant Blood
4 books featuring a bibliophile, bookworm, librarian, or bookshop.
Assigned

Also, for the following books on your list, these prompts have been completed, are in progress or have already been assigned to others since we had too many of us with books for them :) These are the same two where I wasn't able to read my books for, either.

Let me know if either will fit a yet unused task.

7. The Greek Coffin Mystery
2 books from one series with 12+ books and another with 25+ books
5. Promises of Home
A book published in 1996.

Karin | 252 comments This is the list I have been working from for Shari--it somehow got melded with Sunny's list, which explains the mistake, and it must have been very recent.

Shari's List:

1. The Tiger's Wife
Read a book written when the author was under 25 years old.

2. Lone Wolf
*Assigned task*
Read 2 books with 25,000+ ratings each on Goodreads.

3. Where Are You Now?
Read 3 books by an author who has written 25 or more books.
Read 3 books by an author who has written for 25+ years.

ASSIGNED 1. Coward's Kiss
A book written when the author was under 25 years old.

etc--The Coward's Kiss was Sunny's.

Karin | 252 comments I am wrong! Something got deleted in my file! I fixed it. I have no idea how Sunny's name was removed. I cut and pasted the lists so I can search for tasks to people's books. For me it's been easier until this one time. It's impossible to search spreadsheets the same way as Word, Pages or PDF documents (or most internet pages).

It's the middle of the night for Trisha, so I'll just delete that one for now.

Also, during my time here GR suddenly switched the order of posts so the link to Shari's list is wrong--might be safer to give me the message number as well :)

That doesn't help me so much now that GR is messing with the links and the set up of the pages, but I have assigned the reread book from 2012 to Shari so it wont 'get mixed up again. I understand then need for a better format for mobile devices, but not for suddenly doing such a drastic change the the desktop version, especially right when I, and probably others, were using it. I started with the old format, used the link to find Shari's list (did not work--didn't even go to the right page), and suddenly the comment box was at the top and all posts reversed.

It's much easier if

a. people give me the number of their list and
b. when they update it, let me know and also add that book to the original list.

Of course, if the message links start working again, that will be different, but I am wondering if they took that option out.

I have my lists fixed again. Sooner or later something was bound to happen, so ideally this will be it.

ETA I have fixed this. Good catch. Karin | 252 comments Well, lo and behold, today, the first time I clicked here I had the dreaded backward version and then when I went on a second time to get to the sheets (forgetting that I bookmarked our spreadsheet yesterday), voilà, it was back to my getting post one at the top on the first page.

I have not switched to the beta version, so was quite miffed (yes, I bring up old school words out of the blue, some from previous centuries, just one of my idiosyncracies--miffed has never been a day to day word for me) when I suddenly got the backward way.

The mobile version now looks more like old school message boards from the first decade of the 2000s and before, as of yesterday. Before that it looked more like an app set up. I don't konw if they suddenly changed it or if it's because I am using a Mac (not happy with the Mac, but don't care for Windows 10 although it's better than Windows 8)

I have given you another assignment for
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill
book about making new friends
ASSIGNED - book about bibliophile, bookworm etc.

As you can see, we are filling up some of the 4 books ones. I was wondering if you have anything featuring 2 or more people reading together? This is a hard one, and since it is hard to predict, we may end up filling that with a wild card.

message 277: by Karin (last edited Mar 30, 2021 08:08AM) (new)

Karin | 252 comments @Trisha

I have those marked. I'll be back later to do more and post our updates to the readathon tracking thread.

But--as of now, we have filled 22 prompts, so are on our way to having more than half done the first week :). We also have 10 wildcards

IF anyone comes across a scene with 2 or more people reading together please let me know and if it's an easy to fill task, I will be happy to move your book to the 2 or more people reading :)

Also, I have been putting completed prompts in bold (ie if all task(s) are completed) so you can see in a flash. In addition, please take note of the multi book tasks to see if they have all been assigned and whether or not you can look for other books if you have one in something that is filled at this time. I have not put those in bold font, but am going to go now and put an asterisk at the end of each one (I don't know if I can put a symbol first since that's used in math).

Karin | 252 comments Hi all,

Somehow assignments I made this morning were changed, and while I don't know if it was someone from our team or not from now on, please do not update the planning page :). Please do update all of your pages read and hours of listening on the tracking page. If you can post a message here and let me know when you have completed a task that will prevent problems on several fronts :). I see that it was updated today, but in addition to the one change, I found a few changes that I made to assignments this morning and have no way to know who made them.

Shari and I have straightened things out for her with my accidentally melding her list and Sunny's

Sunny is assigned a book written by someone under 25 years old and Shari a book she read in 2012.

ONE BOOK PROMPTS--these are all either completed for or assigned :).

You still have this assignment that I think you have already started reading. I have assigned you everything I have seen that you have given me a shelf for--have you updated your Buddy Reads books? I'm going to check your list on message 159 now, and will be back to ETA.

ASSIGNED 6. The Choice -
Prompt: 12th book on my TBR

ETA - I am only assigning people one book per prompt which is the first choice since we are to complete those with more than one member ideally, so The Guest List can count for pages read, but not for another prompt.

Karin | 252 comments Alyana--could you review your list with the planning sheet? We have either completed or partly completed but fully assigned most of the tasks you have for your buddy reads books. I have assigned you the following from the only book with an open task:

BUT let me know if you come across a scene with 2 or more people reading a book and we can change one of yours IF those are still open ;)

Since we don't have a fourth person with a book for party or anniversary that I know of, You can read this for celebration (wedding)
ASSIGNED 4. The Guest List - READING
Read 4 books with a party (wedding).

Team has completed - Read 2 books with 25,000+ ratings each on Goodreads.

Karin | 252 comments Congratulations on great work so far!

We have completed 23 tasks out of 50 so far! In addition, we have more assigned and 11 wildcards.

In light of this, it's helpful if you take your lists and study the planning sheet to see what is done and fully assigned. As I have mentioned, in the far left column I have put prompts we have finished in bold font. Those that are fully assigned and/or partly completed have *** at the end so I won't be assigning those to anyone who hasn't already had an assignment there. I, too, have not been able to read every book I wanted to for this challenge, and even if it's not fun at first, it's a great sign that we have such a dedicated team :)!

While we can fill up to 11 posts with wild cards at this point, ideally we will be able to read them all.

All pages you read count even if you can't use a book for a prompt.

If you are able to look for different books to read (ideally for free through your library, even if it's via kindle or online, or Gutenberg or Kindle Unlimted) that will meet open prompts, that's helpful, but I can't guarantee an assignment if someone "gets there first" so to speak because they finish their assignments and that is what they have left--it's getting more and more challenging to give those out now :).

Way to go, Guardians :) !!!!!!!

All for one, and one for all :)

Yes I will check my books again if there is a scene with two people reading and I will look for more books that can fit that prompt.

message 291: by Trisha (new)

Trisha (trishabisen) | 2389 comments Avery, 12th book on your TBR is currently being read by Alyana (as I understand from the spreadsheet) so that prompt can be ignored now. The other two prompts that you’ve mentioned, we have one spot remaining each for both, however, since you’ve already read one book for the prompt ‘25+ years’, you can ignore this prompt temporarily and go for the only remaining prompt ‘read a book by an author who has written for 25+ books’. Since you have multiple books for this prompt, pick the shortest one and let Karin know that you’ll be reading it. Once this prompt is finished, you can return to prompt ‘read a book by an author who has written for 25+ years’ if no one else has completed it by that time.

In case all your assignments are finished and you’re still waiting for another one, continue to read any book because all page counts and audio hours count, even if those books do not qualify for prompts.

Also, once our team finishes all the prompts, we need to inform the moderators - we have some plans as to what the teams should do if they finish before the planned end date.

Karin | 252 comments Hi all

At this point I would prefer to only make one NEW assignment per person at a time. So anyone with 2 or three open ones now, I will assign as things are finished, but no more will any of us have 3 assignments at once to make it easier to assign for people who have finished all of theirs (but I won't remove any assignments we are working on!)

I realize I have two that have taken a long time--one is a nonfiction of the type where I am saturated after one long chapter per day. The other I will be finishing today since I only had a bit more than 200 pages left of a chunky novel and am down to about 60--I have been listening to it, but anything I can't listen to while driving to and from work or doing certain chores I will finish by reading tonight. I won't give myself a new one until I finish the one for translated in 25+ languages and the anniversary one--by then I should have only 2 chapters left in my Y book.

Thanks Karin! I have also finished Shadow and Bone, so you can mark that as completed. I'll start the next books today. And I wanted to let you know that someone put Ancient, Strange & Lovely - a book in series of 4 in my column in the tracking spreadsheet. Maybe you should correct that so there isn't some confusion later on.
