Katie Pagan | 5 comments Children's book - a collection of tales. It was possibly a collection of tales about animals. Possibly a collection of tales meant to have morals. I read it as a little girl in the mid-to-late 90s ('95-'00). When I read it, it was not an old book. I mainly remember one illustration, from one story. It was about a monkey in a jungle, who constantly played jokes or bullied his friends while goofing off. Finally, he grabs a vine that broke (?) and fell to his death. The illustration is him screaming while falling from that vine into a pool of water far below, with crocodiles waiting for him. Please let me know if you have any follow up questions. That's mostly as much as I can remember though. Thank you!!

Katie, what's the genre or mood - e.g., suspense, horror, sombre morality tales, any humor, adventure?

Do you recall the cover image?

Katie Pagan | 5 comments Thanks, Kris! I sadly don't recall the cover image - it was the one story that stuck out to me.
The illustration I remember was brightly colored - I remember the bright blue of the lagoon the monkey was going to fall into, and the jungle leaves around were bright green. The monkey had a look of terror on his face as he fell. The illustration wasn't intensely detailed - more cartoony, but looked like it was done with paint or digitally designed, not ink or pencil or anything like that.
The mood of the story was very matter-of-fact, almost like an Aesop fable in tone - it wasn't really meant to be horrifying or suspenseful, you were just meant to take away that the monkey had been misbehaving, and now he'd gotten what was coming to him for goofing off.

Actually that book does seem familiar, but looking at the images and descriptions online, it doesn't seem to have anything about the story I remember.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5384 comments It does. The first story is about a law-breaking monkey who swings from vines, until one day a vine breaks. You can read it on archive.org.

Rosa, thank you, thank you, thank you!! I checked archive.org, and sure enough, that IS the illustration I remember! So thank you again for your help : D
