Klara and the Sun
question
Unexplained words used

Hi, I’m about in the middle of reading Ishiguro’s last book, title above. I was wondering if somebody else who’s reading it could tell me what is their understanding of what it means for a child to be “lifted” in the storyline context. It just keeps bugging me that there isn’t some kind of glossary included to explain many of the terms he uses along the book. Thanks.

I felt like this when I read the book! I kept looking back to see if I'd missed something.
[SPOLIER ALERT]
Lifted means that they have had their intelligence upgraded via genetic engineering.

It will eventually be explained. I think you're meant to make your own inferences about the term and be kept in the dark as everything unfolds.
Yeah, I just finished the book last night and I got to the same conclusion. Did u like it?
All that talk about how Klara saw things (the cubes) got to be too much for me sometimes, I don't understand why it was necessary to keep repeating that over and over. Thanks for answering ☺️

Yes, that was my understanding. And--since it is presumably expensive--it is only available to the wealthy.

Think CRISPR... genetically modified to a higher performance.

Keep reading! Ishiguro doesn't spell things out for you. He slowly reveals.
