Read this in 2016. The main character was named Magnolia but was called Maggie and was around middle school age. The front cover looked like a travel guide and had rubber bands and buttons organized in stacks. In one of the chapters her aunt comes to visit the family and is really mean and has some antics. The book had footnotes and the theme was travel (I remember a part about Magellan and other explorers).
