How do we qualify favourite author and do we all need to agree the same author?

You do not need to agree on an author for this, only which category in the monthly challenge you are going to do. To show it is a favorite author you could sort your read shelf to the author, showing you've read several of their books and rated them highly, and provide a link. Or just saying that would work too. 😊

No, but it needs to be set there enough that someone tagged it, added it to a list or for the selected location to be listed in the book details.
