SOLVED. YA Graphic Novel, kind of dark. Didn't really make any sense (I think this was on purpose). Black and white illustrations. Characters want to see edge of the city, they have machinery they called their parents. Read 2019-2020. Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read a graphic novel somewhere from early 2020 - 2019. It was black and white and didn't really make sense at all but I think that was intentional.
The characters all had some sort of machinery that they called their parents and I think they spoke. I remember one scene where you could see a group of people all racing on weird motorbike/car things and the character said that they were racing their parents.

The plot was mostly centred around this kid who made friends with another teenager at his school. The second teenager had something wrong with him though, he had a dial over his heart and you could change the dials to make him make sense (?). I believe the plot was leading up to something along the lines of 'when he is on his highest dial he can understand things we can't and the dial is actually holding him back/restricting his thoughts'.

I think that maybe the plot of the book was they they wanted to see the edge of the city. I think it had something to do with the teen with the dial (maybe it was killing him? he was dying i think) and they went to the city limits.
