M.F. Hopkins | 28 comments After some confusion - on my part - I'm sharing an excerpt from the third book I'm currently writing, to conclude the Angelo, Texas series.
The books are paranormal/urban fantasy romance. While they have some spicy intimate sex scenes, the books are neither clean nor erotic.
Note that the excerpt here is not sexual; it's a 'meet cute' (I hate the term - lol) of one of the couples in the book. The woman is White, and the man is Asian. It may look like a lot, but with the dialog, it should read quickly:

Dan’s eyes shimmered with another eerie yellow glow before reverting to ice blue.
“What’s going on with your eyes?” Fenella gasped. “Are you wearing contacts?”
Dan chuckled. “Yes. Contacts. The better to see you with, my dear.”
When she backed into a corner of the elevator, he frowned.
“Fen… it was just a joke.”
With a ping, the elevator door opened at the basement level.
“C’mon,” Dan said. “Let me walk you to your car.”
Fenella nodded, before suddenly dashing past him to the best of her ability in her Crocs.
“Fen! I was just joking! Stop!”
Taking advantage of Dan’s initial stunned deer-in-the-headlights reaction, Fenella stopped for a few seconds to remove her shoes, then took off in a runner’s sprint.
She glanced over her shoulder and picked up speed when she saw Dan quickly closing the distance between them.
This is what I get for trying to be nice to a freak, she thought, running faster on fear and adrenaline.
Taking another glance over her shoulder, Fenella rounded the corner and slammed into a brick wall.
……
This wall wasn’t here before…
A steel-like trap kept her from crumbling to the concrete. With buckled knees, Fenella shook her head in an attempt to clear it and her blurry vision.
Runner’s rule #1: While running, don’t look over your shoulder…
Nothing is broken,
she thought, mind still in a haze. But my tits hurt.
After blinking a few times, Fenella stared at a wide, powerfully built torso, covered in a rust-colored T-shirt.
“Oh… okay. Not a… brick… wall,” she mumbled, raising her head slightly. “Static material. What the…?”
Frowning, Fenella raised her head a little higher. She was still staring at a rust-colored T-shirt.
How tall is this mofo?
When her eyes slowly rolled up, she stared at a bobbing Adam’s apple and a stubborn chin. The man wasn’t looking down at her; he was looking over her at Dan.
“Is there a problem?” he inquired, still holding on to Fenella. His deep, rough voice vibrated against her trembling body.
Dan closed the space between them. “You tell me. Who the hell are you, and why are you holding my friend?” His hands balled into fists as his sides.
“Who I am is none of your business.”
After releasing her from his tight hold, the man looked down at Fenella.
“Are we near your car?”
She got a good look at his face.
Holy shit.
“Um… ah―”
“Well, we’re either near your car or we’re not.”
Fenella nodded and pointed at her Ford Fusion. The man gave her a curt nod in return, before squatting to retrieve her purse and shoes. His long, straight black hair almost brushed the ground with his movement.
After straightening up and looming over her, he handed over her belongings.
“Go on and get into your car then.”
His tone was harsh, and to Fenella, she could have sworn that he was angry at her. Like it was her fault she had to run from her psycho co-worker.
She snatched her purse and Crocs from her surly knight in shining armor and stormed over to her car.
“Are you okay, Fen?” Dan asked, while glaring at the much larger man.
“I’m fine, Dan,” she snapped. Once she was safely inside of her car, she rolled the window down.
“Dude… you need professional help.”
“I know,” Dan grimaced. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to creep you out. I’d never hurt you, Fenella.”
He took a few steps towards Fenella’s car, but stopped in his tracks when the man placed himself between them.
“I suggest you get into your own vehicle and go home.”
Dan stared at the man before looking over at Fenella. He waited until she locked the door, rolled up the window and started the engine.
“Yeah,” he muttered, giving the man the once-over. “I should be getting home.”
Standing with his impressive butt blocking Fenella’s view, the brick wall watched Dan get into his black Ram with its dark windows. After the truck disappeared around the corner, the man turned around.
Hunching over, he said something, and made a hand motion for Fenella to roll down the car window.
“Oh!” she exclaimed. Stunned by his good looks ―but not stupid― Fenella cracked it open a mere two inches.
“Are you alright?” he inquired, short of barking.
“Yes, I’m fine. Thanks.” Ya’ grumpy, gorgeous asshole.
The man smirked before straightening up and bracing his huge hands on either side of the window.
“Well… good then.” Silvery grey eyes studied Fenella for a moment, making her slightly uncomfortable.
“You work with that guy?” he finally asked, frowning.
“Yes,” she replied. “He was having a bad day, and I over-reacted.”
Fenella put her car in reverse.
“Just the same, thanks for intervening. I’ll have a serious talk with him tomorrow.”
Taking her cue, the man stepped back from the car. He shoved his hands into the front pockets of his black Dickies and nodded.
“Drive home safely,” he said, in a gruff voice.
“I will.” Fenella gave him a final accessing gaze, then backed her car out.
“Thanks again.”
Before she made a turn towards the exit, she looked in her rear-view mirror. The man was still standing there, watching.

Jmelfi | 117 comments I'm intrigued by the excerpt. I look forward to reading more. Good job.

SassafrasfromAmazon | 179 comments Hello M.F.-What type of sub-genre is the paranormal aspect? Is it contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone? You can call me very intrigued by your work in progress. Good luck!

M.F. Hopkins | 28 comments Thank you, Jmelfi and SassafrasfromAmazon! I appreciate the read and comments.

Angelo II is the third book of a trilogy, so it isn't a standalone - sorry! (Book 2 - A Good and Fair Trade - can be read as a standalone... sort of).
It is a paranormal contemporary, although the first book of the series has a historical range from the mid-eighteenth century up to the present.
As far as the paranormal aspect, it has angels, fallen angels, demons, and a meddling saint, with all of their magic/powers. The book also has a shifter and vampire side character - so far. :)

I have more excerpts on my page, and they're a lot shorter. lol
