2021 Read-a-Thon #1: Team Rose
Kathy wrote: "I finished reading The Poet X and put it for "three books featuring protagonists at different stages of life." This protagonist is a teen. It's a really good book!"
I added it to my TBR shelf!
It has been snowing here so I have been busy baking and cooking while listening to a book about people trapped in a blizzard and one of the is a killer. I hope to finish it soon!I also moved all the completed books on the planning tab to the right so they are grouped together.
Just in case it confuses anyone else once a book takes a spot on the tracking spreadsheet the number of options decreases on the planning spreadsheet. At least that is what I think happens. I was confused since one of my books will work for "featuring protagonists at different stages of life" there are 2 pending books that fit, Kathy filled one spot, and a finished book somewhere else also works there but the # of options is showing 2. So, I think that means one a book takes a spot on the tracking thread our # of options decreases.
I finished The Tenth Island: Finding Joy, Beauty, and Unexpected Love in the Azores and added it for "A book featuring an activity you consider 'self care'"
I've finished Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and have added it to the spreadsheet for "doesn't contain a romantic love story". (There are allusions to past love affairs between some characters but no romance sub-plot within the story itself.)I'm expecting to finish Hamnet tomorrow for the "connected to Shakespeare" prompt.
I finished One by One by Ruth Ware and used it for the single prompt needing the word "one" in the title. Also, I think I got all the gray lines updated on the planning spreadsheet but I might have missed something.
I probably won't finish another book until Tuesday/Wednesday.
I finally finished Half of a Yellow Sun and put it under a book where a character moves to a new home.Jillian wrote: "Just in case it confuses anyone else once a book takes a spot on the tracking spreadsheet the number of options decreases on the planning spreadsheet. I don't think that's the case. When the columns were moved to the end, the formulas were not updated to include those new columns. The formula is just a simple sum. We can update the formulas to include those columns, or just keep them to only include books that aren't done.

Thanks, I was really confused why some of the # of options were so different from what was marked with an X.
Yeah, I hate when I'm like, WTF is going on?!For now, the formulas only include books that aren't done.
So I got The Book of Lost Names in from the library. Does anyone know it fit any prompts that are still open? I'm guessing it spans more than 10 years, since it's a past-and-present story, but I'm not sure if it fits anywhere else.
Nancy wrote: "So I got The Book of Lost Names in from the library. Does anyone know it fit any prompts that are still open? Also, possibly one/two books featuring an elderly character - since the main character is in her 80s when this book begins. I got an ARC copy in 2020. It was a 5 star read for me, and I'm pretty stingy with my stars.
Nancy wrote: "So I got The Book of Lost Names in from the library. Does anyone know it fit any prompts that are still open? I'm guessing it spans more than 10 years, since it's a past-and-present..."I noticed that the GR page for the book shows 1942 and 2005 so it definitly fit the more than 10 years and so far no one has completed a book for that prompt and we need 3 (though I did not look closely to see if anyone has planned books).
Does anyone know what is going on with column J? Yesterday, I fixed all the coloring for it and it has reverted back to being all white.
Thanks for the ideas! I'll add a column for it and put those in.Jillian I noticed that too, I'm not sure what's up with that column. I'd think it could just be deleted since it's empty.
I may have deleted those yesterday, sorry! :) I'm guessing with J (now K), Aimee moved her finished book to the end, but didn't delete the column.
I deleted it. I also deleted two of my books that I probably won't get to and replaced them with The Book of Lost Names. And I updated the formulas to show the number of options.
Just a little update, I just finished the River of Teeth duology and moved the first book from the prompt about pets to the prompt about matching book covers.
Nancy wrote: "I may have deleted those yesterday, sorry! :) I'm guessing with J (now K), Aimee moved her finished book to the end, but didn't delete the column."Oh, whoops! That is probably exactly what happened. Sorry guys!
Okay I'm now reading Dawn of Love.It fits for 2 people on the cover.
I was going to try and get one that fit more prompts, but I decided I really wanted to knock this one off as it's the last in a trilogy - that's not fantastic but it's the authors first works and I'm reading the later stuff and these guys feature so I wanted to go back and find out their story. And it's short, and I paid for it. And this year I want to get to reading the books I bought. Usually the challenge derails my purchased books and I get library books to fit the challenge....anyway, that was a long way of saying, I'm reading this cause it was the one I wanted to read next...

I think, you should definitely read a book you want to read. One read-a-thon, I read a terrible book just to count for a prompt. After that I decided I would just read books I wanted. Generally, they still fit somewhere and if not they still help earn wildcards.
Emma R. wrote: "Just a little update, I just finished the River of Teeth duology and moved the first book from the prompt about pets to the prompt about matching book covers."I moved these to two separate rows, because now those prompts are complete!
I finished The Worst Best Man and put it under one of two for enemies-to-lovers.
Just checking in: I hope to finish Little Beach Street Bakery by tomorrow. Then going on to plug away at The Turn of the Key.
It looks like I will have more time to read this week. I just found out someone at work tested positive for Covid. I feel really bad for my son, he was supposed to start in person learning tomorrow and now I feel I need to keep him home.
Oh Jillian, that's not a fun reason to have extra reading time. I hope everyone in your house stays healthy!
Thank you, Nancy! My son’s school said he could go to school today since no one in our immediate family tested positive or are having symptoms. It is all so stressful.
Just finished One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow, and added it to the 3 themes of friendship prompt. Hope everyone is staying warm today. It's really pretty here in TN with a light snowfall and birds at all the feeders on the deck. I started COVID puzzle #12 while finishing up my audiobook this morning and then made some banana bread. Can you tell I'm retired?
I finished two books:Start with letter L - Little Beach Street Bakery
Feature pets - The Turn of the Key
I just finished My Man Jeeves as an audiobook. I have no thoughts for where to put it, unless someone can suggest something, I'll just use the time towards a wildcard.
Just finished Bring Up the Bodies and put it in as a Book Connected to Shakespeare. Next up, The Yellow House
Good morning (or whatever time of day it is where you are) all! We're halfway through the read-a-athon, and with wild cards, we're more than halfway through the prompts!I will definitely finish my two books in progress but not sure I'll finish more after that, maybe another audio if it's not too long (so NOT Parable of the Talents at 15 hours!).
Good morning team, I went ahead and filled in the finished prompts on the tracking tab. I was not able to concentrate much yesterday so I will probably not finish a book until tomorrow and then one on Friday. Once those are done, I do have a shortish audio book but I have not even looked to see if it fits any where and a longish audio book (I needed a comforting reread with a favorite narrator and story). It will work in lots of spots but I'm not sure if I will finish it since I'm prioritizing all my other books.
I'm expecting to finish The Crystal Shard tomorrow and will put it down as one of the four books "character with a pet" (the MC has a magic panther; an unusual pet I admit but I think it still counts).I'm also halfway through Bloodlust & Bonnets for another book club but not sure where to put it. If all else fails I can put it down as "written by a female author", or I guess maybe "warm and fuzzy" if that's not too weird a description for a graphic novel about regency vampire hunters!
Kim wrote: "Just finished D: A Tale of Two Worlds, but haven't looked to see where it will fit."I'm going to slot this into the Travel book, since the main character travels between 2 worlds.
Jillian wrote: I think, you should definitely read a book you want to read. ..."Thanks Jillian. And sorry about the covid situation for you - how stressful.
I've been offline for a few days so just updated my pages and finished Dawn of Love. I've put it in for 2 people on the cover.
Today I'm in for surgery so I may get some extra reading time in if there is a wait....
I finished The Book of Lost Names and will start An American Marriage tomorrow. I still need to figure out where it goes.
Do you all want to use 2 wildcards for 2 of the roommates prompts? It looks like there is only one planned book and we need 3. Since, we earn the wildcards I always think we might as well use them. I’m hoping to finish both of my books tomorrow Heartless (for the heart prompt) and The House in the Cerulean Sea (pet or different ages prompt middle age).
Jillian wrote: "Do you all want to use 2 wildcards for 2 of the roommates prompts? It looks like there is only one planned book and we need 3. Since, we earn the wildcards I always think we might as well use them...."That sounds like a good idea Jillian.
I figured on Sunday we'd slot in the wildcards, but I don't really care either way. We have 14 wildcards and 22 prompts left.
Nancy wrote: "I figured on Sunday we'd slot in the wildcards, but I don't really care either way. We have 14 wildcards and 22 prompts left."I like the idea of waiting to use the wildcards, as well. I don't really know where a book will fit until I finish it, and I will probably read at least 4 more before this ends.
