Elizabethd, did you read these books in the 1940s/1950s (or is that when you think they were published)?
Would you call these picture books or children's chapter books/novels?
What's the genre or theme of the stories? Who are the main characters and typical plots?
I added some details to the header/topic title. You can update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, click the "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

I'd suggest searching for old children's books on WorldCat.org. For example:
Search using WorldCat.org -
https://www.worldcat.org/advancedsear...
Keyword: hyphens | 1900-1960 (?) | Juvenile | Fiction | Book | English
1) "Baby's Pleasure Book" - 74 pages, illustrations, contents listed (e.g., "The in-jured book; The gar-dens of the sea; Mam-ma's in-struc-tions")
https://www.worldcat.org/title/babys-...
2) "Through the Looking-Glass: In Words of One Syllable" - Lewis Carroll, hyphens divide multisyllabic words into their individual syllables.
