The kid's name is Alex and his dad is part of "Arthur's Circle" which is like the new age king arthur's court. It's like a sci fi fantasy mash up. My son read it and wants to suggest it to someone but can't remember the name or author

My son read it about 5 years ago we found it at a Half Price Books store near where we were living, the copy he had was in pretty good shape so I can't imagine it being much older than that.

This is a long shot, because the main character is called Artie, not Alex, but maybe The Invisible Tower by Nils Johnson-Shelton?
