YA Fantasy. Pterodactyl boy is cast out from clan, on quest to redeem himself. Clan of humans live on isolated mesa in desert, they tamed pterodactyls that carry them aloft. (No other dinosaurs.) Read in 1980s.

Read in the 1980s, pretty sure it was new then. American or British author, can't remember if male or female. All I can remember of the plot: a clan of humans live on an isolated mesa in a desert; they have tamed pterodactyls to carry them aloft. Male hero is cast out of the clan for reasons I can't remember. Flies his pterodactyl far across the desert to civilization on some sort of quest designed to redeem himself. There is no explanation as to why humans and pterodactyls coexist, nor do any other dinosaurs appear.
