Desperate to delay an impending attack by the indigenous people of Xidda, Tau and his queen craft a dangerous plan. If Tau succeeds, the queen will have the time she needs to assemble her forces and launch an all-out assault on her own capital city, where her sister is being propped up as the 'true' Queen of the Omehi.
If the city can be taken, if Tsiora can reclaim her throne and reunite her people, then the Omehi might have a chance to survive the coming onslaught.

First quarter - (view spoiler)[Poor Tau is still grieving from the death of his beloved and it has hardened him into someone even more focused and unflinching than the person he was becoming in book one. He received a poisoned arrow to the leg and instead of allowing an amputation to save his life and to halt the immense pain from spreading, he instead gouged the poisoned flesh out and is now forced to live with a limp and constant pain. He is very much channelling the belief that the body is secondary to the soul and disallowing pain to infiltrate his mind. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Oh gosh, the noble hangings were brutal!! Winter saved his readers none of the details!!

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Tau's mother might not have been the kindest in book one but she did not deserve all she had to witness! I loved how this quarter returned us to how book one begun. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[This entire book has been military and politically focused, which meant scene after scene of action and bloodshed. This last quarter was no different and, somehow, seemed even more bloody and brutal. I loved the extra exploration into the underworld and with the dragons, that it provided. I also found the final battle with lesser and noble champion super intense! The new romance building with Tao was so sweet and totally unexpected, given Zuri's death in book one. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1 (view spoiler)[ Tau's hotheadedness is an excellent flaw, but it can be so frustrating sometimes! The whole conflict was caused by his quickness to draw a blade. I wonder if his character arc will be his change into someone who considers mercy and peace over constant bloodshed and war.

Chapter 3 (view spoiler)[ It is so interesting that Tau killed Kana's father just as was done to him which I gather will lead to Kana becoming vengeful and a lot like Tau.

Finally started the book (way late) but I agree agree about Tau's hotheadedness. I'm hoping he'll learn to use his thinking brain in this one.
