SOLVED. YA Fantasy from early 2000's about a girl trying to keep an orb away from the antagonist [s]

YA fantasy book from the early 2000's. I want to say I read it sometime between '04-'06. It was potentially part of a series but the specific one I'm remembering had a blue cover with the main character, a girl, in the middle of the forrest with a horse/unicorn (my memory is fuzzy on which) and in her hands was an orb which was some sort of big plot device and she spent the book trying to keep it from the antagonist. I want to say it took place in the real world, but in the same way that fae novels take place in the real world where magic is there, just not everyone can see it.
