Diane | 957 comments Oh man, I don't have to keep track of any more books?? It's going to be weird not doing that!

The list looks fine to me, I have one more to finish/post for #13.

message 854: by Kaley (last edited Mar 22, 2021 04:03AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Update on our guesses- we only have one incorrect. Here’s the note from Pixie:

“ 11. Both artist/song is incorrect, though the videoclip for the actual song is alsoblack and white.
For "air" think about something you can associate it with, not the actual word. And the MPG Detective is also an important clue!”

As a reminder here’s the full clue list for that one:
31. Read a book with MPG Mystery or Mystery-Detective
32. Read a book with the word "air" in the title/series title
33. Read a book with a black & white cover

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments After doing a little more digging with those clarifications, I am pretty sure I have figured it out. But I want to get all of your separate input so my guess doesn’t sway your guesses. So message me if you think you’ve got it figured out!

Janeylou | 1255 comments I got it ..will message you

message 857: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments A big thank you to Janine (Janeylou) who found a Meg Ryan hair reference for us!! I'll be reading the book she found. It actually fits for one of my other claimed tasks, not the perm one, so if anyone wants to claim the perm task, it's still up for grabs. If not, I have a book that will work for that as well, so I can cover it if no one else wants to!

message 858: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1255 comments Would this work for permed hair My Summer of Wes (Wes & Mal, #1) by Missy Welsh ....if so would anyone fancy reading it (Diane /Em ) as i already done so

Em how you getting on with Dragon book ?

message 859: by Kaley (last edited Mar 22, 2021 07:46AM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments It all really depends on whether or not it's an actual perm, I guess, or if it's natural hair. I'm guessing with most books they don't really specify.

The only book I know that does specify is Legally Blonde just because I know the perm is a big plot point at the end. (It's what I'll end up reading if no one else finds something hah)

I'm sure there are plenty of books that do specify, though!

Janeylou | 1255 comments Just checked book and it doesnt mention perm..will keep.looking

message 861: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1255 comments Ive just realised someone in the book needs to have/be doing a perm ..thought it was on the cover 🙄🙄🙄🙄😄😄😄

message 862: by Diane (new)

Diane | 957 comments Janeylou, I have already read that book too, even though it doesn't qualify. Do you think Josh does any perms in the Curl up and Dye series?? I could try looking through them. I haven't read them all yet.

Ive looked through the ones ive read and next one and it doesnt mention it ..gonna check a few others out . Im reading a series about a hairdresser in90's so.may find in that one

message 864: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1255 comments Ive found a book for perm

I was so preoccupied with the adventure awaiting me that night with Wacky-Jacky that I misjudged my chemicals, not to mention the specific London “dry” chemical that was still running through my veins. As a result, the color job was a tad brassy, and the perm came out too soft.

Its from A Body to Dye For..diane , ive already read it, do you fancy it , its on KU

message 865: by Diane (new)

Diane | 957 comments So happy to read that one Janeylou -- just picked it up on KU. Thanks!!

message 866: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1255 comments Thanks Diane..he doesnt do any perming in the next book for me to read...this series does got better as you go along . I started it last year for Amazing Race in the task when we read a book from a different decade, there wasnt many MMs i fancied that were written in the 90's

message 867: by Kaley (last edited Mar 22, 2021 02:34PM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Perfect!! I’ll put you down for that, Diane! Just let me know which character it is with the perm when you post!

message 868: by Janeylou (new)

Janeylou | 1255 comments Kaley there isnt a name for the character , its just a customer and the main MC does it ....will.this not count

message 869: by Diane (new)

Diane | 957 comments MC performs the perm I believe. His name is Stan.

message 870: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments It should still work. Just post the location of that passage then (just so I can cite where the reference to a perm is).

There's also a scene where 3 women are waiting on his appointments, a color, a perm and a something else. So, lots of instances.

message 874: by Diane (new)

Diane | 957 comments Diane's March Books

Book: A Body to Dye For
Author: Grant Michaels
Date Read: Mar 23
Cards: n/a

Mini: #23, character gets hair permed:
MC is a hairdresser named Stan. At location 1489 (chapter 7): "...checked the book. One full color, one perm, and one highlighting. Yikes! With three jobs like that, I knew we'd all be at the shop until after 7 o'clock. The solution was to make it into a party. I set the women up at three adjoining stations where I could work them..."
At location 3840 (chapter 19): "...result, the color job was a tad brassy, and the perm came out too soft. I promised both customers that I'd adjust the work within the week, at no charge."

Book: Libriomancer
Author: Jim C Hines
Date Read: Mar 23
Cards: n/a

Mini: #13 -- MC Isaac Vainio has the magic to pull things out of books, but also figures out how to enter one to try to find another Libriomancer who is also using the same book:
" I gradually allowed my fingertips to melt into the page. The pain of Gutenberg's broken magic wasn't as sharp this time...My hand sank to the wrist ..." page 168
"...Every one of those layers was a reader's mental image of Georgia McCain. I was seeing their belief. Excitement surged through me followed by a single question. Now that I'm here, how do I get out again?....if I tried to escape now, I'd have accomplished nothing... Pain returned. I welcomed it. This was the first physical sensation I had felt since losing myself in the book..." page 170

Did anyone else have input on this? I want to get the corrected answer to Pixie soon. So far two of us are on the same page with what we strongly believe is correct because all the clues fit this time, but I’d love to hear additional input — the more of us on the same page, the more confident I’ll be in our answer. Since it’s our last guess I want to be sure!

It just has to be by the end of the mini challenge -- so next week! I'm thinking of submitting Monday, as I know the mods will be busy when the new month starts and I don't want to risk our guess getting lost in the shuffle!

24 March

24. Read a book with a space shuttle on the cover / with MPG "Space"

The cover has Freedom 7 the Mercury No. 7 spacecraft and it's Redstone MRLV rocket . Not exactly the shuttle, but I didn't think it had to meet both criteria.

message 893: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Nope, just one of the criteria, so that’s perfect!

message 894: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments I’m going to go ahead and take the 4 Red because I have a book that just came in that’ll work.

I’ll mark you down for one of the 4 Blues, Diane! We can always switch it to 9 if other people have books that only work for 4, but I don’t want to leave it off for now and forget that you claimed one!

message 895: by Gwen (new)

Gwen | 316 comments Here are the colored cover books I have in mind:

4 Blue: Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble Players Word Freak Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble Players by Stefan Fatsis

OR (also for 4 Blue): Migrations Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy (main character is Franny)

3 Green: Hollow Kingdom Hollow Kingdom (Hollow Kingdom, #1) by Kira Jane Buxton

6 Green: Boy, Snow, Bird Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

5 Yellow: Island Beneath the Sea Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende

6 Yellow: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, #1) by Robin Sloan

3 Red: Magpie Murders Magpie Murders (Susan Ryeland, #1) by Anthony Horowitz

5 Red: Inkheart Inkheart (Inkworld, #1) by Cornelia Funke

Will these work? I may not sign up for all of them but I either have them in my TBR pile or my library has them.

I don't really have my heart set on any of the colored covers I listed so let me know if you want to read "Migrations" - and thanks for the recommendation for "Mr Penumbra's" - that sounds like an interesting book!

message 899: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments I believe all of those should work Gwen & Kimber, so let me know which ones you'd like to claim!

We all agree Migrations is blue, right? Out of habit I check everything against Tineye, even though it's a "backup" and we are supposed to use common sense first ... and it said gray! I think it looks more blue, especially since most of it is sky and water, but now it's making me second-guess myself haha.
