Melindam | 4427 comments Thanks for the link, Laura!

As for the books you intend to read, I am sure we will find good use for them as long as they meet the requirements (Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive).

Heather and I can always move previously assigned books around to make sure, we can cover everything. (this is a usual practice :)

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 640 comments yea i usually read books over 100 pages.... Phew Panic over lol

A Quick question... Which edition do we use... the one we read or the default?

There is no hurry. The only thing that matters is that once you finish a book, please add it to the tracking sheet with the read date + make sure the right edition is added to your UNO-shelf and marked as read.

You will get the hang of it soon.

Hi, Mel!

So, I already have 2 reading planned to be used for Reverse card. But I will start reading the Green Card and do + 2 Reverse. The books are:
The Corset - Green 2
The Color Purple previously read by Alma Concannon
The Tattooist of Auschwitz previously read by Lorna Macleod

I will wait for everyone to check the last column so, if I find any other book that fills that prompt, I can take it as a 3rd reading.

message 60: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments Oh, I kind of have no idea how to do it ?_? Could you tell me how to do, and yes, I can do so!

I will send one of them as an example:

Sorry, if I put it here, the formula kinda gets lost

Melindam | 4427 comments Putting this here, so it doesn't skip our attention : )

As mentioned before, Heather and I will be mostly happy with whatever you will be reading :), but we would like to do some planning around the colour cards + wild draw 4s (duplicating any of our colour cards, each 1 can only be duplicated once) + the reverse cards as these are the trickiest as well as getting the most points.
So we request you to give those books priority in your reading.

In the February hands we have 8 colour cards + 5 WD4s to duplicate one of the colour ones

0 Blue - Alma
5 Blue - Melinda (it can also be used for 0, 6, 9)
6 Blue - Melinda (can also be used for 9)
9 Blue - Melinda (it can also be used for 5, 6)
1 Red - 1
7 Red - 1
2 Green - Barbara
9 Yellow - Lorna
WD4 - Lorna (9 Yellow)

Melindam | 4427 comments Just to reiterate about colour covers

description

PRACTICAL COLOUR COVER Guide

The general agreement on colours is that
1. we use our eyes and common sense
2. in case you are uncertain about the colour percentage, you can use tineye to verify if it's over 50%
3. When in doubt whether a cover is 1 colour or another (ugghh, teal covers are my favourites :), please consult me and Heather. We or the captains' group will have a final say if a cover can be used for a colour card or not.

message 67: by Melindam (last edited Jan 20, 2021 05:03AM) (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Thank you Lorna. If you could read the 2 books for 9 Yellow that would be great! Books read by other team members would also come in handy. Otherwise just grab any book you feel like reading.

Can I also ask you to link your actual book editions to the titles listed on the ss? You can copy the formula of one of 1 my books to do that.
I tried to check out your blue book, but I did not know which edition you actually have.
I found 2, but the 1st is not blue enough, I think and the 2nd is a shade of teal that can be either seen as green or blue, so I wouldn't use it for a colour card.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 640 comments Also does 3.5 books count as a third in series?

message 73: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments From my Sheffield friends I got a lovely little recipe book "Tea with the Bennets". That was the first crumpets recipe I tried which is made with milk. Then I tried 1 on BBC GoodFood. But this year I found the recipe by Warburton's on Pinterest which is the ultimate recipe for me. Actually I made a batch this morning as I was yearning for them. I prefer them with butter and marmalade. I can send you the recipe, but am currently on my phone, so I cannot link it here

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 640 comments Warbatons too!!!!! thank you!!!!

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 640 comments Ok i have just put the Novellas down (Over 100 pages) i definitely intend to get to next month mainly on my kindle, i Audio book with Scribd.... as i audio my title pool diminishes, so with those books i tend to choose what to read next after i finish current read.... Also if i attempt a longer book on kindle need to be in the right mood for it.... or i will take an age to finish it.... but those novellas are a sure thing.

message 81: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments That's what I like about UNO. If a book is above 100pages and the right genre, they count and you get the same amount of points as for long books. :)

Heather Carrasco | 842 comments I found a book that can work for a colored card and added it. Other than that I'll go where my mood takes me I think!

message 84: by Alma (new)

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments OK so I've added a few books. I don't know if they will work with the ones already added. Could you also explain about the colours? What is the number beside each colour. I've got two blue books and an red one, perhaps debatable?

message 85: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Thank you Alma. I will have a look tomorrow. The numbers mean that beside the colour they also have to fit a number rule as well. i.e 7 Red - Has to have a character/author's name /title starting with V

message 86: by Heather (new)

Heather Carrasco | 842 comments Alma, if you think your blue or red books might match one of the color cards we need, let me know which ones and I'll be happy to take a look.

I have never seen Labyrinth and it doesn't even sound familiar lol.

Hi Alma,

I checked your books and Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell as a standalone (= card 0) suits the colour card 0 Blue perfectly.
It is more than 50% blue.
Also, I filled in the tracking sheet with more data for your other books, so they can fit quite a few cards nicely. Have a look.

As you are reading them, you may find more character/place names that may fit other cards, then please add those as well.

message 94: by Barbara (last edited Jan 21, 2021 02:15AM) (new)

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments Hi, all!

I am more concerned now about the 9 Cards 7-V, because only 5 readings fit that prompt. This is the only prompt we are seemed to be "low" on choices.

We have 12 Reverse choices, which is great, team.

message 95: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Hi Barbara,

don't worry. I wouldn't plan too far ahead just for now. We don't need to have all cards accounted for before we begin.
Also our team will be adding further books as the challenge starts. Plus, in the middle of February will have an additional Mini Challenge with some special, exciting tasks where some further planning will be needed.
That does not mean more books per se, as those we read for the mini will also count for the regular cards.

In the middle of the month Heather and I will see where we are with filling cards and will let you know if we need some more targeted reading.

message 96: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments All I ask of you now to leave some books (depending on your monthly reading capabilities :) for after 14 Feb, when the Mini challenge starts. If you get to read some reserves at first, that would be great. BTW, I read Pride and Prejudice, so I put my name there in your list

message 97: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Yes, it will not be revealed before, but it is connected to the general challenge theme: the 80s.

There will be mini challenges is March and April as well, to allow teams to gain extra points.

You are right! The goal is to have some fun and not making this something hard to deal with. Anyway, I am free to follow instructions when we get stuck. Let me know! (:

Last time I played UNO was 4 or 5 years ago. I remember that the theme was "Other types of UNO", and I am quite sure I was UNO Hello Kitty, and that was super funny, but I can't remember how everything worked, I guess I just followed the team's lead so lost I was on that time.

By the way, good news: The Labyrinth is on Netflix!!!!

message 99: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Barbara, I absolutely appreciate your enthusiasm, but as you just said: make sure you chill out and have fun with us and UNO! :)

We will let you know in time if we need more books for this card or that. And Heather and I can always reshuffle the books if necessary.

Netflix for Labyrinth! Great. :)

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 640 comments went to re watch labyrinth with my 6 year old Ioannis, we dont have it on netflix here... we ended up watching addams family... still a classic
