Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count.
The challenge starts on Monday February 1, 2021 at 9am UTC time.
COUNTDOWN

description

PRACTICAL COLOUR COVER Guide

The general agreement on colours is that
1. we use our eyes and common sense
2. in case you are uncertain about the colour percentage, you can use tineye to verify if it's over 50%
3. When in doubt whether a cover is 1 colour or another (ugghh, teal covers are my favourites :), please consult me and Heather. We or the captains' group will have a final say if a cover can be used for a colour card or not.

Colour Cover recommendations
((Please ask the Captains first! Colour Extractor))

COMPLETION POSTS

* Please put those editions on your UNO-shelves
that you are reading and also link those on the tracking sheet.

* Once you finish, mark your books as read and make sure they
have a read date. Please add the read date to the tracking sheet.

* And then post your completion post here. If you already have
every detail on the tracking sheet, it's enough to add the book
link + the read date in your post. If, for some reason you couldn't
add your book to the TS, then post here all the details.

Hello and Welcome to Team Labyrinth!

I am Melinda from Hungary. This will be my 5th UNO challenge and 3rd time as captain.

I live near, but outside of Budapest, in a small lake town with my husband and my 6-year-old son. I practically grew up in a library, with my mum being a librarian, so my love for and fascination with books is a matter of course. :)

Our theme this year is 80s movies and I have always loved the movie Labyrinth AND David Bowie, of course! :)

Have you seen the movie yet? Or are you planning to?

I have sent friend requests to all of you I haven't met with in a team challenge or other and will let you know as soon as the thread will officially be opened.

Hello Heather!

Waving to Sandy and Colleen! Nice to see you again!

Alma, Barbara, Laura, Lorna! I hope you will find UNO as much fun as I did ever since I joined it for the 1st time. If you have any questions, Heather and I will be here to help you!

We have been dealt some really exciting cards and quite a few colour covers, but I am sure we can deal with them.

The main thing is that we all have fun while reading and connect as a team.

I also have a 6 year old ( in three weeks) and a 4 year old (next tuesday).... Love Bowie was lucky enough to hear him play at rock festival.... I seen the labyrinth it's a classic... Not the new one

Look forward to playing

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments Hi everyone, this my first time playing this game. I'm Alma and love reading books. Unfortunately I'm not able to read as much as I would like to being busy looking after my two little boys.
I am really looking forward to this game but I will probably need a bit or rather a lot of help to get my head around it.
I'm guessing it is the captain and co-captain who decides who reads what or am I completely wrong? Help please....

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments Hi, Labyrinthers haha

My name is Barbara, I am from Brazil but currently living in Ireland. I am super excited to play UNO with all of you. I've watched the Labyrinth 10 years ago or so, and of course I fell in love with David Bowie! I am planning to watch it again just for the fun of doing so.

I would like to know if there is a way we can arrange our planned reading for February. Will we use a Spreadsheet?

I have sent an invitation for everyone, because I am ENFP, a super excited Extrovert!

Love,

Melindam | 4427 comments Hi Lorna and Laura!

So glad you are in our team. Your fresh enthusiasm is catchy, not that I lack any when it comes to UNO. :) And I am glad you like the movie and Bowie in those iconic leggings.

Lorna, I had friends living in Sheffield (they moved) and I visited them there 3-4 times some eons ago. :)

And Laura, you reminded me that I need to make some crumpets. I love them, but you cannot get them in Hungary, so I learned how to make them. Tried a few recipes, but I found the one that's perfect for me and I make them regularly.

Melindam | 4427 comments Hi Alma and Barbara!

Lovely to meet you here.

@Alma, UNO might sound a bit ominous, but as soon as you get into it, you will crack it easily. Feel free to ask questions. We'll be here to help you. We want to keep it as much fun as possible, so we will not definitely not decide on what you should read, it's totally up to you. Just make sure you jot down the names of characters/series/authors of your book and we'll see which card we can use them for.

message 19: by Melindam (last edited Jan 19, 2021 12:25PM) (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments @ Barbara and All
in my message 6, you will see a link to a tracking spreadsheet I created for us to record our books. You can already start putting in books you want to read, just make sure you link the right edition.

Also, can I ask everyone to post the links to your uno shelves, if you know how. We need to make sure that you put all books you want to read on those shelves and mark them as read when you are finished

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments Thanks Melinda, I saw the spread sheet and just one more question, do we need a book for each card or more than one?
By the way, I've never watched The Laberynth or heard of it which is rather embarrassing but it'll be my goal this month to watch it and probably enjoy it indeed.

message 21: by Alma (new)

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments Hi Laura and Lorna, you really sound very enthusiastic and like you could read a whole library in a day. Actually all of you seem to read a lot more than me at the moment. Barbara, I am living in Ireland myself, we could be neighbours without realising

Yes, 1 book / card it is. Apart from the Draw 2 cards as for those we can use 2 books for 1 card. But there are not many of them.

Hope you will like the movie, but you shouldn't be embarrassed about not knowing it. I am not a movie buff, even though this is 1 I love.

No, no. Sorry for the confusion. It means we have to read five 0 cards, etc. :)

message 24: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments I am more of a planning than a randome reader myself, but I am happy with whatever you read.

The only exception, where I think some planning ahead is needed is with the colour cards and the reverses (read a book one of your teammates had read already) and we have plenty of both. On the tracking sheet, you can also indicate if a book is good for a colour cover or if someone in the team read it.

All teams got selected around the number of books we indicated to read in a month and it amounts to 90 more or less.
I said I would read 16 books in a month as that was a safe option for me, but I will read more.
Still, don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself. If you can read more than you originally intended, that's great, but don't feel bad if you cannot.

SandyL | 336 comments Hi Everyone!!

I'm excited for another year of Uno!! This will be my 4th time playing. I'm a combination mood and planning reader - I also do the SRC challenge, so I try to find books that work for multiple challenges. I like this one, because almost everything will work somehow!!

I live near Los Angeles, California so it looks like I'm in an opposite time zone from most of you. I don't have any real kids, but I have my fur kids - right now, it's dog and 2 cats. I also often foster dogs, but it's my busy time at work for the next few months so I probably won't have any fosters for a bit.

My uno shelf: uno-2021

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and I already know that Melinda is an excellent captain!!! We're lucky to be on her team!

message 29: by SandyL (new)

Hi, Lorna!
So, I already checked your books and put my name at the end of the sheet to those I have already read. Now the Captains can use your books to Reverse Cards.
I also put a color on your name to keep your name visually easy to find. I hope you like the color blue (is one of my favourites!!!!)

message 31: by Heather (new)

Heather Carrasco | 842 comments Whew! I missed a lot already!

Hi everyone! I'm Heather and I'll be your co-captain! I'm so excited for another year of UNO...this will be my 5th year (I think), and my 2nd time as co-captain (I was captain for a couple of years as well).

I live near Los Angeles, like Sandy. I have two kids -- an 8 year old and a 5 year old -- and we've all been stuck at home together for 10 months now with no end in sight! I also have two fur-babies and more fish than I can count. I work full time in marketing research for one of the subscription streaming companies.

With all that, I don't read nearly as much as some of you, but I definitely try to get as many books in as I can. I'm a mix of a mood and planning reader...I'll plan more as I see colors that we are missing that I can help with, or cards that I can see we need more of (like the 5s).

Feel free to reach out if you need help or have questions!

Where in the LA area are you? I live in Santa Clarita (kind of near Magic Mountain), and the wind is CRAZY today!!

message 33: by Heather (new)

Heather Carrasco | 842 comments And, I'm sad to say I've never seen this movie. I'll have to go check it out. I'm looking forward to what the theme might mean for our mini-challenges.

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments Hi, all!

So, I organized some of my following readings and you will notice that most of them are standalone books. I tried to add characters names, author name and title. Feel free to add on the Reverse column your name if you had read some of those books!

This is my plan for the whole UNO Event but I will try hard to read more than those books (I will try to increase my reading by +2 books). However I will move next month and God knows how chaotic this is going to be!

I can change the order of reading if the Captains ask me to do so. I am waiting for instructions!

Love,

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments Hi again, another quick question. One team member must read a book another team member has already read, could you explain this a bit more? Iis it a book already read and available on one of our goodreads shelves?

Hi, Alma!

There is a card called Reverse and the only way of filling it is by reading a book that another member had read. The last column in our shared spreadsheet is reserved for it, have you checked the spreadsheet? I will send it so you can take a look.

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments I am commited to read my books respecting the sequence on the list. 5 of the books on my list are suitable for Skip (we have 9 cards), and 2 are suitable for Reverse (we also have 9 cards).

Have I mentioned how excited I AM?????????????

message 39: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments Alma wrote: "Thanks Barbara"

I saw that you filled some blanks with your name to the Reverse column, and that will help us a lot because we have gotten 9 Reverse Cards (I found it at the bottom of the spreadsheet).

Those colored cards are so hard to fill, by the way. Good luck to us :D

Hi Heather. I'm in Burbank. We don't normally get too much wind here, but it's pretty gusty today too. I saw there is a wildfire not too far from you in Newhall - hope they get it out soon!!

Heather Carrasco | 842 comments @Sandy Nice! My office is in Burbank. Not that I’ve been there recently. Lol.

Yeah there have been a few fires up here today. Luckily nothing close to us. And I’m thankful to still have power. Seems like they have cut power to a ton of homes up here, including those just across the street from us.

Melindam | 4427 comments Dear All,

It always warms an UNO captain's heart to meet such enthusiasm early on. Heather can confirm from her experience as well, how much easier this makes our "job", which in this case does not seem like a job at all. :) So thank you to all.

We only need 1 team member, Colleen to drop by sometime and then our team is complete. :)
