Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments I find it quite morbidly fascinating the way it has globally changed our way of living so dramatically. Crazy to think this time last year we were more concerned about the bushfires, and a month earlier barely a care in the world!

Love it! Although I get anxious at the thought of giving away books I haven't read, even if they HAVE been sitting on the shelf for over a decade!

Mmmm! Mine need reducing dramatically - especially as we haven't been able to have our meet ups in Sydney (I usually take a small suitcase full!) But we have a new op shop opened nearby and I'm going to take a heap to them..... soon.....

Same here Brenda. I have two boxes of books, and two of assorted stuff which needs rehoming. Said boxes sit near my front door waiting to be taken .....waiting.....waiting....

I hear you! I have a bag of books to pass on, but they have been sitting in my spare room for a few weeks now.

message 16: by Li'l Owl (new)

Li'l Owl | 2504 comments Hi all, Owl here, checking in from the US,

Great News! Coronavirus isn't the first headline in the news since this time one year ago!

The bad news is that it's been replaced by the insurrection of the capital building! Started by the grand old party's escaped psych patient!

If you need a belated reason to be thankful in 2020, be thankful you live in Australia!

Honestly! The coronavirus has been worrisome all year but I haven't felt scared. Now? I'm not feeling too safe my friends!
Yes, He got impeached (again) but I really want him out of power! He has done more than crossed the line, he's blazed past it! Yikes!
I haven't felt this disconcerted in a very long time, if ever. I just don't know what he'll do next!? It makes me sick to my stomach.

It's been a sketchy 2020 with the covid nightmare which "you know who" has made so much worse! I've been fine as I live alone and have only one visitor so I'm not too worried about covid but.... I haven't seen my Dad for over a year as he has many risk factors.
He will be able to get the vaccine in the next month or so! Great news! I'm a little leery about the side effects but I think that the vaccine is the better option than getting covid, for certain!

On a good note, lots of good things are going to be happening soon! Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take over the funny farm in a handful of days! I think our country will slowly heal and recover once that happens. They have their work cut out for them that's for sure! Fingers crossed that we don't have any more violence! The FBI is concerned about violence against all fifty Capitol Buildings in every State. Let's just hope not!

Democrats will now have the House and the Senate!

Anyway! Happy New Year! 🎉

We've been getting the updates here, too, Owl, and it's so terrifying I have started ignoring all the stories on it. And that's from a safe distance! I can't imagine how terrifying it must be to be living through it over there. Stay safe!

message 18: by Li'l Owl (last edited Jan 14, 2021 04:02PM) (new)

Li'l Owl | 2504 comments What's been happening with all my friends? I hope all of you are well and your families.

I don't know anyone with covid but my world is pretty small. My Dad, Brother (Chuck), and SIL (Chris) are all well.
Chuck is a high school music, (band) teacher. They don't have kids in class yet, well, they haven't for a year or more now. Even I can't wrap my head around how he's teaching on line! He says it's not going too well but it could be non-existent. He doesn't think the kids are learning much. He lives in an area where it's low-income families, parents who aren't engaged very well, so neither are the kids. If he were to pass grades out now, he thinks most of his class would fail. And we're talking Band Class to Teen-agers! I can't even imagine what kind of education the kids here in the US are getting but it can't be good.

I think that the kids are suffering badly from the pandemic the most.
Again, it makes me feel so relieved that Biden - Harris will be taking over. At least they FEEL for the people they are in charge of! What a concept!
Honestly, you guys, I can barely get through any speech that Joe or Kamala make without tearing up! It also feels wrong to call them with last names vs first. They are people who care. I can physically feel the kindness and calmness that practilly radiates from them. It's truly astonishing. Is that too weird?

I think it feels so strongly because of what (not who) has been in charge. It's a whole new reality between Trump and his lap dogs, and Joe and Kamala. At least I know they won't attack us!

I missed my 2020 reading goal by 10 books! So close! 190/200. This year I have cut it down to 125 for the year 2021. I want to do some more out in the yard and have more time to do my drawing, adult colouring.

See you soon!

Angela Verdenius (angelacatlover) | 380 comments Weird things are happening with friend requests. Not because I'm getting them (now that sounds like bragging!) but because when I go to the profile to check out the person (yes, I'm one of THOSE people!), they have a website link, and every time I follow it, it sends me to a site asking if I want to exchange nude pics!
The requests also simply say 'hi 11378467' which must be my number or something (I don't know) and I find suspicious anyway.
Needless to say, I've been ignoring the requests, but...what the heck????

FYI - if I share nudie pics (which I never would) , a) my camera lens would shatter at the sight of my nudie body, and b) the viewers would need therapy. Forever. Just saying...

I’ve had 5-6 of these lately. Always the same number, which I hadn’t recognised, but you might be onto something with your theory. I checked out the first couple of profiles and couldn’t really tell whether they were real users or not. But in any case, I just block them when I see the number now.

Whenever I get a friend request from someone with nothing but a link in their profile, I delete straight away. I definitely check profiles when someone requests because I don't want spammers as friends.

I've been ignoring the requests. I've had them from different profiles (men and women) but every one of their website links from their profile pages leads to the same nudie pic website...I never thought to check if it's the same number. Will do that next time definitely!

Terrible to see the unrest, Owl. Frightening for everyone. I hope for everyone's sake that things settle down soon.
I feel like 2020 and 2021 are mad years. Or maybe it's mad people ;-) Everyone is mad and/or offended by everything lately!!

Please remember to flag them too. All those spam/inappropriate posts, requests need reporting and flagging is the best and quickest way. Inappropriate posts on reviews (which a lot of people have been getting today) all need to be flagged. Don't delete first as there's nothing for GR to view then.

Do you know roughly how long it takes for GR to review that kinda stuff, Brenda? Because I tend to just delete straight away - I don't like seeing that kinda stuff on my reviews.

message 32: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

That's why I put 'flagged' under the post once I've done it. It's only a couple of days as a general rule. I keep the individual's notification and keep checking it until it's all gone. Same as when we had that author who abused Kylie for giving his book a negative review. He was reported and the lot was gone, even Tracey's excellent post pulling him into gear. They're pretty good with spam and inappropriate behaviour, that's why I think it's up to us (the people affected) to report them, because they'll keep doing it otherwise.

Ah ok that makes sense! And obviously they are quite onto it today because I clicked on your example and it said 'comment not found' lol I didn't know Kylie had been abused over a negative review though! I hate seeing that happen!

Oh wow! Well, to answer your previous question - only a few hours! lol I guess it depends if it's the weekend or not. But as I said, when they are flagged, they can be deleted. We'll never get rid of them all unfortunately, but it doesn't hurt to do it as you see them :)

I had one recently that I left and his profile was gone within a few days XD I also just get a lot of young ones who like to spam reviews with comments like 'hi' and 'how r u' etc.

I usually ignore them after their first message (after replying politely) and their profiles tend to disappear quickly so they are being removed promptly (but are still annoying!)
