A young boy's father wants him to become a teacher like himself, but the boy doesn't want to and becomes a monk, instead. Their god lives in a walled off monastery and the boy is able to go in and talk to him. The god bestows powers to the young boy, I believe, but I can't remember what powers he gains. There's also another society that sacrifices people to a sun god by intoxicating them and throwing them off a ledge/cliff. The boy fights with this other society. He also meets up with a girl from this society that he saves and travels with her. There might of also been another boy in the group as well. I think this book was part of a series. I read it in middle school or early high school and rented it from our school library around 2004-2010.
