Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments Last year I posted a New Year's Reading Resolutions challenge on Facebook and we had a lot of fun with it, so I thought I'd share the challenge here this year.
Challenge begins Jan. 1, 2021 and ends Dec. 31, 2021.
Come play in the stacks with me and chip away at your Mt. Toobie!

1. Read a book that you have been meaning to get to for a long time but for some reason, you haven't. (The time is now!)

2. Read a book and its sequel or the sequel to a book that you've already read ... or both.

3. Sort your BC shelf by To Be Read, then select - Others, In Hands, Recently Released, Ascending - that should show you the books sent to you by other BCers that have been on your shelf the longest.
From the first 2 pages read at least 10 of those books.
10 is your goal but the more, the merrier!

Happy New Year & Happy Reading!

Nancy Brady (minesayn) | 162 comments You know I am up for that, Edwina, even though I did not complete all of last year's challenges (I will try to complete a few of those, too).

2. have to select a book(s) for this; thought it was a series thing
Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg (DONE) and its sequel, Spellmaker by Charlie N. Holmberg (DONE 4/10/21).

3. From my list:
Mistletoe Magic by Betty Neels (READ 11/20/2021)

Death of the Party by Hart (READ 6/23/2021)
See Jane Score by Green (READ 6/2/201)
The Debutante Divorcee by Sykes (READ 3/12/2021)
Twenties Girl by Kinsella (READ 5/20/2021)
Winner Takes All by Roberts (READ 6/26/2021)

Somewhere Off the Coast of Maine by Hood (READ 3/29/2021)

If you don't have enough books from Bcers then just read books that you have had the longest.

Deb (imawinn2) | 40 comments I am going to bite on this one. I won’t make you beg, Edwina. I can do it, but I can see that I will be double booking it for a bit, since I have some borrowed books to get through ASAP.

ROFLOL!
So ... will your borrowed books fit my other challenge?

Deb (imawinn2) | 40 comments You are a funny gal. If I jumped in on this second one, I wouldn't get anything done, but I will secretly keep track track and let you know how close I get.

Penny | 14 comments tigergirlnz reporting in for duty:
Oh damn it, I'm going to join in, mostly because it will get me reading 'those' books I've been meaning to read off the shelves so that others can take their place (I'm generally good at reading books from the first that came to me on BC Mt TBR but terrible for those others that have sat on my shelves for a long time). First however, I've got to finish 1 book for another BCer to receive next [COMPLETED] and 2 books that are brand new that I've been dying to read (The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins [COMPLETED] and Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline [COMPLETED).
So
Resolution #1
Magi: The Quest for a Secret Tradition by Adrian G. Gilbert [COMPLETED]
[I've had this in my possession so long that I'd almost forgotten why I wanted to read it. It must be time]
Resolution #2
Tales from the Tower Volume One: The Wilful Eye [COMPLETED]
Tales from the Tower Volume Two: The Wicked Wood [COMPLETED]
[I ordered both of these new from a catalogue at work in 2010/2011 but never read them. I think ten years later I should]
Resolution #3
1. The PowerBook by Jeanette Winterson [COMPLETED]
2. The Testaments by Margaret Atwood [COMPLETED]
3. Dewey by Vicki Myron [COMPLETED]
4. Dancing Girls by Margaret Atwood [COMPLETED]
5. The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants Official Scrapbook [COMPLETED]
6. The Devil Wears Prada - Lauren Weisberger [ABANDONED on pg127 as it was awful - movie is better!]
7. The Alchemist - Michael Scott [COMPLETED]
8. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith [COMPLETED (but should have abandoned)]
9. Booky Wook 2 - Russell Brand [COMPLETED][which means I will have to read 'My Booky Wook' [COMPLETED] first, even though I received it later]
10. The Bone Clocks - David Mitchell [COMPLETED]

Right now I'm considering myself lucky. I've only been a member of BookCrossing for a few years so my BC Mt TBR isn't as high as my 'other books' Mt TBR.
OK let's do this!

Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments Nancy, not sure that I understand your question - "Or is this one out of the three, Edwina?"
Are you asking if you only have to do 1 out of the 3 to complete the challenge? If so, then the answer is no. The challenge is all 3 parts, not just one of them.

Edwina, I thought this was like the monthly challenges, but I figured out that it was all three of them throughout the year. Not a problem as it helps me focus on getting some of the earliest registered books moving.

Having said that, I do have a question about No. 2. Sequel or series? I can do either, but need your expertise. ;)

message 11: by Edwina (new)

Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments Nancy, not a series. A book and its sequel, or you could do a Nora Roberts trilogy if you'd like. Or maybe you read a book a few years ago and just now got the sequel, you could read that.

Thank you. I can do that. I have a book and its sequel as well as a trilogy. Either way, I think I figure it out.

Edwina Book Anaconda | 260 comments Thanks for signing up and Happy Reading to all!

Grada (BoekenTrol) (boekentrol) | 5 comments Well, I think I will be part of this challenge. There's a lot of books on MTBR to qualify, so here goes!

1. Read a book that you have been meaning to get to for a long time but for some reason, you haven't. (The time is now!)
O Jeruzalem by Larry Collins
Took it home with me from a meeting because I was (still am) interested in the history and the how and why of the Middle East, especially the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It's been in my possession since 2012. *Shame*!

2. Read a book and its sequel or the sequel to a book that you've already read ... or both.
That's a hard one. I Have a few that qualify for that challenge. First there's the fantasy series Night Watch by Sergey Lukyanenko, of which I've read part one and the other three are on TBR.
And second there's James Clavell's Escape, the sequel to Whirlwind. The latter I read years ago. A brick of a book, the needs rereading before I can get to Escape. So... undecided yet.

The book on spot #1 is the book I picked for the first one of these challenges. So 10 others to pick.
1. Coming Up for Air by George Orwell
2. Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham
3. Restless by William Boyd
4. My Side of the Story: Trouble at the Mill by Philip Wooderson
5. The Quincunx by Charles Palliser
6. Caravans by James Michener
7. The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Peney
8. Aan de grond by Kirill Gradov
9. Los Alamos by Joseph Kanon
10. Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber

Thanks!

Grada (BoekenTrol) (boekentrol) | 5 comments And today I managed to totally ignore the above listed books and start another. Also an oldie, but... not as old as the ones I listed here.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer by Jennifer Lynch is the one I'm reading now. It is the same kind of book as The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn by Robin Maxwell that I pledged to read beforee the end of March (BookTube challenge that I discovered on Instagram). So... Not such a good start for me. But hey, the year's still young!

Penny | 14 comments Oh heck! Does anyone else have the problem that while you're trying to complete these, you just want to Wishlist tag others with books that are further down the line to read??? I've tried very hard so far this year NOT to tag anyone with a book not in the New Year's challenge list, but I like to take part in Wishlist tag and I've tagged 3 people with 3 other books so far, and am having to read those, 2 of them in this week alone, damn it!!!! :-{
