Ernoir Neuvostarr | 3 comments Hi all, I'm Ernoir and I focus on historical fiction. I am planning to publish my debut book on 4th May (hoping the all starrs align and The Force is with me!). It is the first book in my Paradise Island trilogy loosely based on the 16th Spanish conquest but with a difference (I might need to get in touch with Jasmine the Gatekeeper at a later date when I feel ready to give away a few prize copies!). Keep safe all.

Michael Whatling Hi. I'm a Canadian living on beautiful Vancouver Island. I work in the film industry in a rather strange job, teaching child actors on movie sets. (Yes, kid actors still need school.)

My first novel, The French Baker's War has been released this month. Of course, it's historical fiction, about a baker in occupied France in 1943 who returns home to find his four-year-old son in the street, his wife missing, and a Jewish escapee hiding behind the display case.

Thanks for the warm welcome Janice. Not sure my book is suitable for kids, unless they are late teens, because there is death and destruction, as you would expect in history!

Hello

My name is Sarah.

I wanted to join this group as I have a place in my heart for historical fiction and I am also hoping to read more of various time periods as well as connect with like minded readers.

Regarding time periods I am interested in reading about; I will admit I tends to read more in regards to European history particularly around war of the roses and the Tudors but I am hoping to also expand my reading to other time periods and settings.

I am still in the process of thoroughly learning my way around therefore I am still in the process of finding all the books I have read at this point. Along with reading historical fiction and nonfiction; I also read romance and fantasy therefore I prefer to read across genres.

Hi all, I'm an avid historian, researcher, genealogist and author of historical fiction. Typically I'm interested in 18th & 19th C stuff, but if my interest is piqued on a subject, I will read and research it! I'm really hoping to immerse myself in discussions, so feel free to say hello.

D.A. Galloway | 2 comments Hello. I am new to this group as both a reader and an author. I enjoy reading about adventurers and explorers. I started writing in non-fiction and decided to join the creative world of historical fiction...perhaps because I wanted to exercise both sides of my brain! Maridele (dellydo) | 5 comments Hello! I've become an avid reader during the pandemic. I find that I go in spurts on what I enjoy reading but I do love historical fiction even though I'm not currently reading any. I have discovered "cozy culinary mysteries" recently which are light, easy reading. I am also for the first time "reading" three books at once. I put reading in quotes because I'm actually listening to James Patterson's Women's Murder Club series. I have a "cozy culinary mystery" on my kindle and am reading an Amish book in actual book form. But I have The Yellow Wife on my "want to read" list and will hopefully fit it in before the end of June.
I love browsing book shelves in thrift stores and we have excellent ones here that are run by a hospice organization. I probably have more books on my "want to read" list than I will ever be able to read.
As for my Goodreads Challenge, I am 70 books into the year which is actually the number I read the total of last year. I've set my goal for 100 although I may have to up that if my currently pace continues.

Trish Kallis (trishkalligosfyris) | 7 comments Hello,

I am late to the re-introducing post!
My name is Trish and historical fiction novels are my absolute favourite reads. I read other genres as well but, the books I end up loving the most and reviewing the highest are historical fiction novels!
I have my own book review blog - www.turningpageswithtrish.com- that I try to post on regularly but, I also make sure to post my reviews on Goodreads too. I love this community, I love reading everyone's reviews. I am not always good with staying on top of the messages from the group, but I always look at the list of books being read!
Thanks for allowing me to join this group!

Jo Horne | 1 comments Jo here. I am a writer and avid reader of historical fiction. I live in Wisconsin but was born/raised in the very SW corner of VA--so a true hillbilly. When not reading or working on next novel, I love to take long walks by Lake Michigan; watch movies (mostly Netflix these days), dabble in art projects; and travel (hoping to get back to that soon!). If anyone knows research resources for figuring out travel between St. Louis and Milwaukee in the mid-1850's, that would be great! Stay safe and active and in touch...jo

Dealt with some of that in my last novel. St. Louis was a busy place then, the 4th largest city in the US. Many of the rail lines were small-- sanctioned by the state. Chicago was a major rail hub. There was no bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis until later, so, like seven different railroads converged on Illinoistown (Now called East St. Louis). Everything and everybody was then ferried across the river. The original cliff face that protected the city from the floods had been altered into a levee, with tracks that ran along the top, you had to cross those to enter the city proper from the east. But goods could be loaded and taken to points around the city. The Pacific railroad was the train going west, by c. 1865 it had been completed as far as Kansas City. That depot was all the way out on 14th & Chouteau Ave (but connected to the waterfront by the interurban line). The other rail line was the St. Louis & Iron Mountain, completed to Pilot Knob c. 1858. Their depot was in the south end at 2nd & Plum. By 1860, two trains per day of high quality ore were being shipped into St. Louis, smelting and iron manufacturing became big business (before that, they were shipping the iron by wagon to St. Genevieve, then to New Orleans by boat. Riverboats were big time, steamboats traveled up and down both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The St. Louis harbor was busy. One trip from St. Louis to Ft. Benton would pay the cost of building the boat. In addition, flatboats were a big thing. They would be built from green wood up river, then carry payloads downstream. After reaching their destination, they would be sold for lumber and the process would be repeated. National archives have lots of period maps online. Or, check out my novel, Gilding an Age (by Kurt Burke).

Hi Madeleine! Just jump in if a particular book or topic piques your interest. Some discussions act like a book club and discuss mutual reading. Others are authors, reviewers or publishers trying to promote their work. But overall it's a great place to make connections and express yourself, so welcome!

Irene (irenecolth) | 4 comments Hello!
I'm Irene, and I review for the Historical Novel Society. By day I teach English as a Foreign Language on a freelance basis. I'll read just about anything in the genre except historical mystery (just not my cup of tea). But I love colonial North America and the early US republic. I'm one of those aspiring writers, too :).

message 133: by Nicky (new)

Nicky (nickyxxx) Hello all. I'm Nikki and I've been a long-time reader and GR user. Recently I got more into historical fiction such as westerns. I also want to explore the WW1/WW2 kind of era, and perhaps some Viking stuff (I'm playing AC Valhalla for the first time, hence my interest). I write, too, and I'm currently working on a steampunk/western hybrid. Other hobbies of mine are... hmm... gaming... well, I guess that's kinda it, hobby-wise. I shouldn't have started this off as a list.
Anyway, I hope I'll get some recommendations here or give one or two. Thanks for having me.

I'm into literary fiction - historical, period-piece stuff, victorian, 18th, 19th century. I like mystery/horror/sci-fi/fantasy stuff too. Not into YA!! I've been recently trying to write a review for most of the stuff I read. Looking to add some friends here, so feel free to add me!!

I like those genres too. I'm pretty new to historical fiction, I'm still finding out what era I like best. I'm reading Outlander now, which I'm not sure is really historical fiction, but I'd think so? And I like sci-fi too!

Mark (markpeters) Hi Everyone! I’m brand new to the group… I found out about it today when one of my good GR friends mentioned it in passing. I thought it looked interesting and I’m happy I stumbled upon it :)

I’m somewhat new to historical fiction, having been a longtime fantasy reader who recently decided to expand my horizons. I’ve been a history buff for most of my life, so why not? My primary areas of interest are the Ancient World and the Early Middle Ages, but I’m open to trying authors who write about almost any era. So far I’ve read and enjoyed books by Mary Renault and Steven Saylor, and I’m planning to read some novels soon by other authors who have piqued my interest, such as Colleen McCullough, Bernard Cornwell, Manda Scott, Michelle Moran, and Simon Scarrow.

Looking forward to chatting with you all here, and discovering new books!

Christopher A. Langston | 1 comments Hi - My name is Chris. I am a historical fiction fan (Flashman, Hornblower, Maturin/Aubrey) but I'm actually posting for my Mom. She has been a life long historical fiction fan (Mary Renault, Bernard Cornwell, Dorothy Dunnett, etc.) and although she is blind now and can't really type, she listens to books on tape and would love to find a zoom/facetime group to discuss historical fiction novels. Does anyone know of such? Would anyone like to join her in a conversation every week or so? Please let me know.

THanks, Chris

message 150: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Hi, I've been lurking a bit, but I love seeing what historical fiction is out there. The more obscure the setting the better. (Just how much WWII and Tudor fiction does one need to read?)

I am in my 50s and I live in eastern Washington State - a red county in a blue state. (We had 100s of people protesting the governor putting out mask mandates for school children.)

I love crosswords, Godzilla, James Bond, mystery, space opera, romance. My favorite historical eras are WW I, period between the wars, and historical fiction rotating on scientists, women, etc.
