Michelle (michellehartline) | 3168 comments I read a teeny tiny, highly unsatisfying story last night, temporarily discontinued a book featuring a plague, (which really stinks because I had been looking forward to continuing that series), and began The Last Kingdom. Hopefully the last will keep me busy for a bit.

message 2202: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments We did it! I read the 1000 pages of "The Way of Kings" aloud to my boys. I thought, they probably might now be old enough to enjoy the intricacies of the plot and hell did they enjoy the ride! When time allowed we sat there for several hours reading on and on. Their enthusiasm about story and characters and their guessing about some of the plot points was so delightful to witness. It was my 4th read of the book, yet since it was the first time in German and the first time eye-reading it I got some new insights as well.
After saying "the end" they had me instantly buy the next book and start reading it to them. Two new Stormlight Archive fans are born :D.

As much as I love literary speculative fiction and poetic writing, from time to time it just has to be the comfort read of the best epic Fantasy of all times. Each time it makes me feel comforted and excited anew.

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments That’s so great Gabi! 😍 I’m jealous of people with kids, my brothers better hurry up and have some so I can read to/with them! 😄 Have all the books been translated to German or will you have to wait for the newer ones?

message 2204: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments @Anna: with the exception of Dawnshards everything is translated. I hope we will get Dawnshards as well, because it is rather important before Rhythm of War.

@Thomas: yeah! Congratulations. I love the enthusiasm in your review.

message 2205: by Ra’s World (new)

Ra’s World read books with Ra I have just started “Akarnae” by Lynette Noni
It was free on Audible and so far I’m enjoying it.
In December I have sped through: The Saviors Sister, The Snow Queen, Treasure Island, The Farm, The Seven Husband’s of Evelyn Hugo, Always Greener, The Neil Gaiman and the end of the universe and A Wrinkle in Time.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3168 comments I finally got around to Bernard Cornwell's Viking-era series. I inhale his books, so beats me as to why it took me so long! I mean sheesh, I already own all of 'em, so there's no excuse. So anyway, I just finished The Last Kingdom, and holy crap it was good!!

message 2207: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6105 comments I finished The Necessary Beggar by Susan Palwick last night. This was really good and different

A member of a family on another planet killed someone and the punishment was exile to an unknown planet for the whole family. The unknown planet was earth and they ended up in a government owned refugee/illegal alien camp in the middle of Nevada.

The different part was the way the two societies were so different. The society of the family that ended up in the US elevated beggars and when people dies, they came back as other living things, so one blessed the fruit before one ate it because it could once have been a person.

message 2208: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments I read Necessary Beggar a year or two ago, CB, and enjoyed it, too. It was a good depiction of both the good and bad parts of family life. I have Shelter also, not yet read.

I just started King's Dragon and stayed up way too late yesterday and now I'm 40% in to a 22+ hour long audiobook. It's hittin' all the epic fantasy joy centers of my brain, which I thought I'd stomped out with all the sugared honey ice tea I've read recently, but nope! We're on a quest! And there are chosen ones! And there are elves! Hop on!

message 2210: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3168 comments Oh my gosh, I read that book years ago! I can't remember a thing about it, and I had read the whole series, too.

message 2211: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments I finished Amatka last night. What an interesting book! Words are reality in this world Karin Tidbeck created. And words are used to keep this world at bay and remain true to who they were when they arrived. But is this life really living?

Saar The Book owl | 161 comments I'm almost wrapping up Bewilderment by Richard Powers . 100 pages to go, but finishing today. This book got me on a rollercoaster.

Allison, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far! It's been years since I read that book; I mostly remembering liking it a lot (ran off to buy sequels and spent some hot July nights reading until dawn) but I also remember parts of it being quite dark/heavy. Looking forward to seeing your review later!

message 2214: by Rick (new)

Rick | 260 comments Finished The God of Lost Words, the third and last book in the Hell's Library trilogy. A love letter to books, libraries and readers.

message 2215: by Rick (new)

Rick Norris (rickenorris) I finished "Immortality, this is probably a Novel." Very well written. I posted a review if you want to know a little more.

message 2216: by styx (new)

styx (evolvedstick) | 4 comments I'm currently reading Kingdom Of Ash which is the last (7th) book of The Throne Of Glass series!

I’ve read quite a bit of Cornwell myself, and this series is my favourite.

That's good to hear. So far the Sharpe series is my favorite, but hopefully this will be on par with that!

message 2219: by Yvette (new)

Yvette | 2 comments I put some Juliet Marillier on my list as to my deep shame I have not yet read anything by her. Also The Physician by Noah Gordon.
Let's hope George Martin comes back to his Game of Thrones series, but I'm not holding my breath for that one.
As always, I am aiming at a mix of Fantasy, Thrillers, Historical Fiction and Crime, whether it's in English, Spanish or French, we'll see.

message 2220: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments The Physician is great. Hope you enjoy it!

message 2221: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1221 comments I'm currently listening to Network Effect, which is great. Got lots of mowing done this morning (until the mower ran out of fuel, unfortunately), while listening to Murderbot throw a hissy fit at ART.

And I'm currently reading The Great Hunt, but finding I'm skipping whole bits to only read my favourite bits. Probably why re-reads work for me. But interesting in terms of what should/should not be in the story. If I was the editor, that is. 😂😂😂

message 2222: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3168 comments I just finished a second reading of As the Crow Flies, which is such a fun book! The MC is one of those hilarious likeable rogues. That's a trope that never fails to draw me in like bees to honey. I'm about to read the sequel next.

message 2223: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Reading King Dog (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...) by Irsula K. Le Guin. It’s a “screenplay” so quite short, maybe a long short story almost novelette. It’s experimental in style, so we’ll see how much I like it. It’s a bit of a genre bender too. Medieval court drama with a sneak SF element.

message 2224: by Rui (new)

Rui | 2 comments I am actually rereading Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan...
And Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

message 2225: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments We are stuck in a place with no TV and no internet, with constant rain and the problem that my youngest son needs a PCR test for most activities indoors, cause he is not yet fully vaccinated due to his age. So we have a lovely family bonding time, sitting together with a fan heater and reading aloud "Words of Radiance" - my partner and me alternating whenever our voices give in. 4 hours yesterday evening. The Stormlight Archive is becoming a real family event and I just love it!

message 2226: by Chris (new)

Chris (nakor) | 69 comments I'm about halfway through Ship of Magic now. Having also read the Farseer Trilogy before this, I have to say it feels like Robin Hobb has a talent for writing characters who can make terribly foolish mistakes in ways that are totally understandable.

There's so many characters in so many books that leave you thinking "how in the world could anyone do something so foolish", but somehow Hobb has a talent for writing a character that leaves you thinking, "yeah, I get it." This character, in this situation, with this background... I could totally picture them making this terrible decision in this moment.

Not every character of course... the world is filled with its actual fools and those of ill intent. But it's not super often you find a character in a story leaving you thinking, "wow, that was a terrible call... but I get it."

message 2227: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments We have a web of buddy reads for the whole Robin Hobb Elderlings universe here!

message 2228: by Gary (new)

Gary Gillen | 192 comments Finished reading Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey. It is book nine and the last of The Expanse Series. Great book, great ending for the series. I am reading The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower #2) by Stephen King. I plan to read The Jekyl Island Club by Brent Monahan next.

message 2229: by Aubria (last edited Dec 31, 2021 11:15AM) (new)

Aubria L. | 5 comments I just started reading or should I say listening to Fallout, bk 13 in the Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson, Narrated by R.C. Bray.
I love this series! I highly recommend the audiobook version, R.C. Bray is a phenomenally talented narrator!

message 2230: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments I've gotten an early start on my resolution to read more non-fiction in 2022, so I'm currently reading Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams and Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, both of which I'm finding interesting.

I'm also about to start on the audio for the next book on my Wheel of Time read/reread: The Shadow Rising. If I remember right, I think this was one I liked a lot the first time around. I'll be curious to see if that stays true.
