Roz | 4529 comments I'm reading The Last Green Valley. I don't understand something concerning this book. Why are there 2 other books by the same name (same cover and same book) with 2 different authors (Brend Nolan and Thomas Mellor)? Something is wrong.
I'm enjoying the book so far.

PattyMacDotComma I read enough of Double Blind to agree with those who thought Edward St. Aubyn was showing off and being preachy. One or the other, I might manage. Moving on!

PattyMacDotComma Her Second Death (Bree Taggert #0.5) is a short-story prequel to Melinda Leigh's homicide detective Bree Taggert crime series. I had never read any of this author's work before, but I enjoyed this introduction enough to consider reading the series.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Hamnet for the monthly challenge. The first couple of audible reviews were super negative about the narrator. I actually really like her, she just pulls me straight in and I only want to focus on her. She's got my full attention. With my previous book I got more easily distracted.

Kristie | 19139 comments I just finished Darkness Falls Darkness Falls (Kate Marshall, #3) by Robert Bryndza . I thought it was a great addition to the series. 4★ Darkness Falls review

I was going to start my re-read of A Christmas Carol today, but decided to wait and add it to my toppler reads tomorrow.

PattyMacDotComma This has to be one of the most remarkable debuts I've ever read! The Booker Prize people liked it, too. If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor has a mysterious event at its heart. Who did what?

PattyMacDotComma There should be lots of books like this for kids (and their grown-ups). It's beautiful, it's informative, it's scary, and it's funny! What's not to like about Nenek Tata and the Mangrove Menace (set in Sabah, Malaysia) by Judith Vun Price

Kristie | 19139 comments I re-listened to A Christmas Carol while I was wrapping gifts today. It was really enjoyable.

I'm now back to The Shadow of the Wind. I put it aside during our buddy read earlier this year and never got back to it. I honestly would have just completely forgotten about it, except I need it for the yearly challenge. So, I am picking it up again and hoping to get through it pretty quickly so that I can move on and try to complete my last few books.

message 1014: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finally finished Murder at the Vicarage for the group themed read.

I will start At First Light tonight which is a new release.

message 1015: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I'm just about to finish A Crown of Talons which has been very disappointing. I really enjoyed book one of the duology, A Throne of Swans but the finale lacks any tension, or it may be that I'm just not in the mood for it ;-)

message 1016: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I've decided to read cozy reads and series books until the end of the year. Right now I have Cream Puff Murder and The Lost Order waiting for me on my kindle. I didn't make great headway in killing off started series this year, but certainly put some serious dents in a few to set them up for 2022.

message 1017: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Man, oh, man... I definitely feel like the odd man out, but I am struggling with The Shadow of the Wind. I just don't care about it at all and I have so much left. I'm having a difficult time keeping track of what's going on. I feel like there are too many side stories, which all lead back to the main story, but I just don't find them that interesting. If it wasn't for the yearly challenge I'd put it aside. Hmm...

message 1018: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments After thinking about it, I'm going to put Shadow of the Wind aside for the moment. If I am able to finish the other books I need for the annual challenge, then I'll go back to it in a couple of weeks. If not, then there's no reason to drudge through it.

I'm going to start Opal Fire for the monthly challenge.

I am also currently reading Reckless Girls.

My daughter was reading TSotW too, Kristie, and said she was struggling through it. I think she finally put it aside.

Maybe it is more a mood thing and the time of the year. I do not think it is wrong to put it away and try again another time.

message 1020: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Yes, I'm hoping I can quickly find another book set in Spain for the yearly challenge. If not, I will try to get through TSotW, assuming I am able to finish my other challenge books first. I've got my work cut out for me over the next couple of weeks!

message 1021: by Cherie (last edited Dec 13, 2021 05:57PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Fire & Blood today.
At first it was like reading "the begats" in the Bible, but I think Simon Vance could read those too, and make it sound interesting. It was a long story and did not any way make me less appeased that we are still waiting for the last book in the series A Song of Ice and Fire.

I am almost finished with Eight Skilled Gentlemen, which is the third book in The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox. This is the shortest story of the three in the trilogy, but I really have to concentrate or my mind wanders.

I will start Under the Whispering Door tomorrow. I was on the waiting list at my library for over two months and I need to read it before it expires. I only have it for two weeks.

message 1022: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished The Lions of Al-Rassan. It was amazing. Guy Gavriel Kay can craft a story that pulls out the emotions.

I will start my monthly challenge read tomorrow - Oracle.

message 1023: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma I enjoyed Aussie investigative journo John Bailey's second outing so much, State of Fear, that I'm now reading the third one! Tim Ayliffe is an excellent writer whose characters are hunting terrorists - right now!

Well we can be odd men out together Kristie! I listened to that a while back. Everyone kept assuring me I'd love it and, like you, I struggled. There's no such thing as a book that will work for everyone ;-)

message 1025: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I've started The Last Widow. I'm glad to be back with two of my favourite fictional characters together in one story. I've obviously missed a few books along the way but WFH it's a thriller.

Not sure if it's your cup of tea, but there are several expat memoirs (series) set in Spain. I enjoy them, and they are short and quick reads. I'm thinking of for example Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools: Tuck into a Slice of Andalucían Life, Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucía, Seriously Mum, What's an Alpaca?. The first two are better than the third, in my opinion.

Another Aussie author to look out for, thanks Patty.

But talk about an overachiever. Managing Editor of Television and Video for ABC AND a novelist in his spare time?? I think I'm doing well if I manage to get pants on for the day. Jeez...

message 1028: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Agreed, Margo. I've put it aside again. It may work better in print for me and I may try that at some point, but maybe not.

Thanks, Peggy. I was originally using it for the Spanish work translated to English, but switched to the set in Spain task because it will be easier to fill. I'll check those out.

Rus, I'm with you. But, maybe he's writing in pajamas? lol

I agree, Cherie. He's a favorite.

I'm still listening to Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. So packed with technical stuff that I mostly just "in-one-ear-and-out-the-next." But the story is terrific, of course.

Kristie | 19139 comments I ended up starting Keep Moving And Other Truths About Living Well Longer by Dick Van Dyke Keep Moving: And Other Truths About Living Well Longer for the man with hat on task for the yearly challenge. I have five books to read in the next 17 days. I think I can do it. lol

message 1033: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Thanks, ladies! I figure even with taking a couple of days off to visit with family for the holidays, I will have a very long commute to and from our visit, so I think I'll end up with enough reading time. We shall see! I also have the monthly challenge book and 3 review books planned, but I've tried to choose at least a couple of shorter books. So, fingers crossed!

I agree Rusalka. I don't know how Tony Jones managed his The Twentieth Man books either!

message 1040: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma This book is unique. Not just kind of different - unique. Naoki Higashida wrote a memoir The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism, which is not only informative but entertaining! For a kid who couldn't "communicate", he sure learned well, and he has a good sense of humour, too.

Peace Talks, Dresden seemed like an obvious choice when I remembered we got the latest audio books in the middle of the year. But I must say no commuting to work at the moment is making audiobook time harder. I'm hoping when I finish work next week I can smash out some gardening hours.

No, that one completely threw me too. Do these journos never sleep?

message 1043: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Perfect choice, Rus. My audiobook listening time dropped significantly when I stopped commuting as well. For some reason, I can't just sit and listen like I would sit and read. I always feel like I should be doing something else while I listen.

Christina ❤️M❤️ (christir1159) | 1 comments I think, I'm going to start Hell of a Book. It showed up 3 weeks earlier than expected from Libby. I also started Where the Mountain Meets the Moon for the 3rd time for my 6 year old. She is home sick and it is just such a good book.
