PattyMacDotComma I was delighed to enjoy watching Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club solve the mystery of The Man Who Died Twice. It's every bit as good as their first outing, I reckon!

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished The Shadow of What Was Lost today. I will start Half Sick of Shadows tomorrow. One book had the sword Licanius, and the other has Excalabur. We're on a theme.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I also finished my ebook that I was reading, Storm Cursed. I will start the next book in the series, and the last of the published books, Smoke Bitten.

I didn't realize that there was a series made out of the these books. Unfortunately it's on BBC and I don't have access. Lucky you! I really enjoyed the first book, as you did too, and I'm looking forward to reading the second. I've placed a hold on it through my library, so hopefully it'll be soon.

Katrisa | 4460 comments I just finished Velvet Was the Night which I was really excited for because I have really liked all the other books of hers that I have read, but this one was not my favorite. I didn't hate it but I didn't really like or care much about the characters so that it not as enjoyable. I like how Moreno-Garcia writes books in lots of genres, but this one was not as good as her others.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished Smoke Bitten. I enjoyed it more than the previous book in the series, but I was a little weirded out. Why would the author assign a new magic to Mercy in the 12th book, when it was never previously mentioned? I was thinking, "What?"

I started an orphan in the Hangman's Daughter series, The Council of Twelve.

Roz, I meant I was watching them in the book. I think Spielberg is filming it, but I don't know if it will be a series or a movie.

message 766: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma I just enjoyed the tender and funny Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune, the story of a selfish man who uncomfortably learned about friendship, love, and life only after he died.

PattyMacDotComma I always like the Buzz Books, by Publishers Lunch, which publish the first chapters or excerpts from dozens of upcoming books and are free for anyone to download and read.

Buzz Books 2021:Fall/Winter includes selections from famous established authors and some wonderful debuts. There's also non-fiction and Young Adult. I've included a smattering of samples of a few that appeal to me.

I've marked this series as completed because I've read all the published books. There's a new one expected in 2022, but I'm not going to read any more. The stories have become predictable and repetitive, except for Mercy suddenly and inexplicably acquiring a new magic.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I don't know if I've reported what I'm reading lately.

My audiobook is Half Sick of Shadows, a retelling of the Lady of Shallot's story as she foresees the fate of King Arthur and company.

I just finished The Council of Twelve on Kindle for the museum challenge. I will start Devotion on Kobo today. It's the oldest print book on my tbr.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm reading The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women. The author is "visiting" the local library next month, and I registered for the zoom meeting.

Lilisa | 2770 comments Finished Cloud Cuckoo Land. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

I was listening to Three Apples Fell from the Sky but something called library due date interfered so it’s to be continued until I can get my ears on it again. I’m listening to Facing the Mountain: A True Story of Japanese American Heroes in World War II and enjoying it.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Kristie wrote: "That sounds interesting, Sandra."

So far I've read only 30 pages, but it is really interesting. The author makes a lot of assumptions and interpretations, but she says it expressly. It is a rereading of the information we have in the light of the discovery of a viking female warrior of high status. She is trying new interpretations, but not trying to make it pass as hard evidence of anything.

message 775: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments That's good, Sandra. I appreciate when an author explains that certain comments or thoughts in the book are their interpretation and not scientifically proven facts. I'll be interested to see what you think when you finish it.

PattyMacDotComma The Rowland Sinclair historical mystery series is terrific. He and friends travel around the world "between the wars" (WWI & WWII), chasing Nazis, dodging gangsters, mixing with the rich and famous (which Rowly is himself). Cameos: JFK, Errol Flyyn, F. Scott Fitzgerald among others.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished Devotion. That was a hot mess. It was Alice in Wonderland is a demon hunter who meets up with vampires and has sexy times with them. FFS. The author has only written this book in 2013, and it was to be the first book in a series. Yah, no thanks.

I started The River for my real life book club. It will also fit the museum challenge.

Best in Snow review

I'm currently reading Candy Coated Murder. It's a short book and I'm hoping it will feel a little festive. I'm also about to start Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man for my RL book club while I'm waiting for the toppler.

PattyMacDotComma Don't forget to remember! Having said that, you're probably remembering it all wrong anyway.

Neuroscientist Lisa Genova has got it all covered in Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting, which explains a lot about why we argue about memories and worry about dementia.

Interesting, easy read and excellent resource.

Kristie | 19139 comments I finished Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man. I thought it was a good collection of information, but there wasn't anything in it I hadn't heard before. I think it is a great place to start talking about race and hopefully people will continue to seek out deeper conversations. Unfortunately, the people who need to hear the information likely won't read the book.

I am putting Candy Coated Murder away until after the toppler. This actually works out pretty well since it's a Halloween murder mystery. Reading it closer to Halloween will be good.

I am going to start These Silent Woods and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine for the toppler in a couple of hours. Eleanor Oliphant is also my challenge book for the month, so I'm happy to be getting that read early.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments On audiobook, I finished Under the Whispering Door the other day. Last night I decided to dnf my ebook read, Every Single Secret. I was dreading it each time I went to read and figured that wasn't the goal. So I read the last couple of chapters just to know how it ended.

Today, I start all new books for the toppler. The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant on audiobook and An American Princess: The Many Lives of Allene Tew on ebook.
