The $1,000 loan he gave to a friend’s son was used to start a single sandwich shop. That shop grew into the world’s biggest fast-food chain.

This is how my daughter met him. Of course i grilled her about him and she told me he was as nice and generous as one might expect.

RIP Nesmith

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 30364 comments 'Interview with the Vampire' author Anne Rice dies at age 80

(CNN)Anne Rice, author of the best-selling Vampire Chronicles novel series, died Saturday, her son announced on social media. She was 80 years old.

She passed away due to complications resulting from a stroke, Christopher Rice said.
Rice's biggest success was her first novel, "Interview with the Vampire," which was published in 1976 and introduced the character of the vampire Lestat, who would be the central character in the 13-book Chronicles series, the most recent of which was published in 2018.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 3968 comments RIP Anne Rice.

message 168: by madrano (new)

madrano | 24689 comments My mother brought Rice's work to my attention because the author (& her husband, Stan Rice graduated from my high school, albeit almost a decade earlier. I'm not one for vampires and i wouldn't have thought my mom was, yet she kept up with the books. I recall her return to Catholicism engendered quite a bit of newspaper articles but i don't recall hearing that she next turned to secular humanism. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Rice )

What a wonderful career and marriage she had. Her literary legacy, as well as her son's writing will be long lived.

RIP Rice

That's a cool six degrees of separation, deb.

I am also not one for vampires books.

I do recall the discussions when she returned to her Catholic roots then the falling away from the church.

I wasn't exactly sure what is meant by secular humanism. Here is the wiki.

Secular humanism, often simply called humanism, is a philosophy or life stance that embraces human reason, secular ethics, and philosophical naturalism while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, and superstition as the basis of morality and decision making

Her death shocked me. I can't remember if I read the book but I remember seeing the movie.

message 174: by madrano (new)

madrano | 24689 comments I saw the film, too, but didn't read the book. I have no comparison but i can see how Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series were spawned from Rice's work.

My ex told me that she used to live next door to Archie Manning (Peyton and Eli's dad). Trent Reznor (from nine inch nails) lived on Manning's other side. My ex used to say Archie Manning was the light-hearted creamy center to a dark spiritual Oreo.

Both my husband and I were surprised - what are the odds of all the shows he did that we would see Vlasta perform. We rarely watch the reruns.

bell hooks, the renowned author, scholar, feminist and activist whose work examined race, class, gender and the ways they intersect, died on December 15 at the age of 69, the Lexington Herald reported. She died at her home in Berea, Ky., surrounded by friends and family.

Born Gloria Jean Watkins in Hopkinsville, Ky., she published more than 30 books under the pen name bell hooks. She explained in interviews that it was her great-grandmother's name, and she wrote it in lowercase letters to focus attention on her words, not herself.

madrano | 24689 comments I read several books by Didion. The first was a novel, Play It As It Lays. It’s been decades since then but i still recall that the movie equaled it in a lack of satisfaction.

Her earliest success was her collection of essays, Slouching Toward Bethlehem. There were i liked but it pretty much persuaded my “New Journalism” isn’t my cuppa.

The Year of Magical Thinking was different but i liked it best. Her descriptions of the losses she experienced were at times chilling. She left behind work to study for years.

RIP Didion

Edward O. Wilson died this week. The man loved insects and wrote about many, but it appeared ants were the glory of his insect world. I first heard of him years ago and only in the last year read his Tales from the Ant World and was delighted by the autobiographical bits, as well as the wealth of facts i learned about ants around the world. He will be missed but his writing lives on.

RIP Wilson
