Michael Kelly #2, OK to read as a stand-alone. Chicago, present day. P.I. Kelly gets a case which appears to be spousal abuse but which turns into several murders and serious political corruption, along with some serious rethinking of the origins of the great Chicago fire of 1871. Very well written mystery; liked the characters and loved the fast-moving plot. Maybe the characters could have been more deeply developed, but nevertheless this one gets 4 stars.

Another Beaton mystery next, the 7th Hamish MacBeth mystery, Death of a Prankster

The Rose Code follows three young women who worked at England's Bletchley Park, a country estate converted to a code-breaking facility during World War II.
Very good story. 4 stars

bit behind on crime reading these days, but the next book will be (as part of reading Black History Month) The Conjure-Man Dies: A Harlem Mystery: A Detective Story Club Classic Crime Novel by Rudolph Fisher.
Otherwise, I've finished Cane, by Jean Toomer, started reading The Collected Connoisseur by Mark Valentine and John Howard as part of a very-rare-these-days, other-group read, and I'm more than halfway through Susanna Clarke's Piranesi which I am loving, at least so far.

A lovely, character rich story.

In this 7th book in the Jesse Stone series, the police chief teams up with a Native American criminal to help a teenage girl.
Can be read as a standalone.
So-so story but fans of the series would probably like it okay. 2.5 stars

The fact the PTSD riddled, pill popping main character is an unreliable narrator adds a nice twist to a good mystery. 5*

It’s a very harsh winter in 1717 Swedish Lapland; a Wolf Winter. As the people try to survive through the months-long darkness with little food (a three year famine) and struggles between Christian beliefs and the beliefs of the Lapps, Maija attempts to solve the suspicious death of a man married to a suspected sorceress.

Richard Jury #7, OK to read as a stand-alone. Jury and Plant end up in a small English village in which some dogs and cats have possibly been killed and find the same thing going on with some of the villagers. Loved the characters but the plot seemed a bit weak. 3 stars.
I finished Piranesi. Haven't posted about it yet, nor have I given it a rating, but it was absolutely gorgeous and completely appealed to me. Now I don't know if I can read for the rest of the day.

I read those like eons ago. The plots are fun but you're right -- the characters are so much fun and you can't help liking them.

CR: "Every last Fear" by Alex Finlay

I simply go off the goodreads recommendations. The last book I read was the girl on the train.
Patty wrote: "Just started The Tenant by Roland Topor (1966). Roman Polanski made a film based on it in 1976."
Great book. I'm So happy Valancourt decided to do this one to make it more widely available.

In this second book in the 'Susan Ryeland' series, the literary editor/hotel owner investigates an old murder and a current disappearance. The book works fine as a standalone.
Fun double mystery. 4 stars

Another great addition to the series. Here’s a link to my review:

Dr. Siri #8, in which Dr. Siri and his whole circle of friends and frenemies get drafted to accompany an expedition to find the remains of an American pilot. Of course, the trip ends up hip deep in espionage and murder. I like this series a lot but this is not the best entry. Some rather unbelievable plot devices and other items left unexplained at the finish. 3 stars.

This is a heartwarming true story about a man and his dog.....who someone stole. 3 stars

I read that last year and enjoyed it. But then again I have a thing for mysteries that take place on transports.
