Ah - so this is why their IT people are so bad:

"without competition “Amazon has very little incentive to improve Goodreads while no serious competitor exists and its ‘core experience’ is good enough.” That may be why the interface is notoriously clunky and the “Ideas” section of the Goodreads website seems more like a graveyard than a working collaboration.

Patty | 4452 comments Oh. My. God. I just finished The Auctioneer by Joan Samson, and it is a masterpiece. I have no fingernails left. It would be a great book to read for our Literary Darkness group read.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE NIGHT MANAGER by John Le Carre’. This is a stand-alone thriller novel published back in 1993 that is not part of the author’s famous George Smiley espionage series.

It was made into a TV series back in 2016 that starred Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander, Olivia Colman, and Elizabeth Debicki. I thought I would read the book before possibly sampling the television adaptation.

Patty wrote: "Randy, my copy is from Valencourt 😊"

I have really enjoyed the first two books in the series and I look forward to reading the rest of them. The audiobook of Shadow of the Wind was not so great though - I listened to it recently to prepare myself for reading Angel's Game.

I'd not read him before, but now I have, Nancy!

The classic Graham Greene novel, The Quiet American, is up there with my favourites. Vietnam in the early 1950s - what a mix of people and a mess of politics and war, plus a love story.

That's a good one -- I loved it too. I'm thinking the last Greene novel I read was The Comedians, set in Haiti. Ironically, there's no comedy involved -- very tense story.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Black Out is an example of masterful scene-setting undone by plate-of-spaghetti plotting and uneven characterization. Until I steel myself to read the second installment in the series, I'll keep the author's skill with atmosphere in mind while I forget the mess that surrounds it. 2.8 pairs of black-market silk stockings rounded up to three.

I love that series.

I recently finished The Traveller and Other Stories by Stuart Neville. It's a collection of short stories with a novella at the end. The novella is a continuation of the story of Gerry Fegan and Jack Lennon from his prior Jack Lennon books including Ghosts of Belfast (aka The Twelve) where Fegan is introduced.
