That's great, Nancy. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I just wanted to clear up the genre label as I think it can lead to disappointment/unrealistic expectations for some readers. This book deserves to find its readership as the prose is gorgeous. Happy reading!

re clearing up the genre label: I totally get that. Thrillers that don't thrill, spy stories that are not about spying ... argh. Been there, done that.

I found it a fun, quick series. Of course, two of the books took place in Chicago, home for much of my life.

speaking of fungi, I've recently finished reading Truffle Hound: On the Trail of the World’s Most Seductive Scent, with Dreamers, Schemers, and Some Extraordinary Dogs by Rowan Jacobsen. Next time you eat truffle fries (which I can't stand), you're not getting any truffle at all, just olive oil with a dash of 2,4-dithiapentane, a synthetic chemical that offers up a "heavy-handed impression of truffleness." I've been sitting on this book forever and felt guilty about not finishing it, so it's been a midnight-oil sort of read.

Araych | 676 comments The Woman in the Woods The Woman in the Woods (Charlie Parker, #16) by John Connolly by John Connolly

Charlie Parker #16, can be read as a standalone but not recommended. In this book (which was written in the 3rd person, unlike the others I've read) Parker is hired to find the identity of a woman found buried in the Maine woods. This is an outstanding book, although it's so creepy I couldn't read more than about 20 minutes at a time. Given that, it's a masterpiece of the genre. 5 stars.
