Magic Men #4, possible to read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the series in order. In this one a girl in Max's show is murdered and it looks like the killer isn't finished. Absolutely wonderful continuation of the Magic Men series, highly recommended.

You'll get no argument from me. I'm only about a quarter of the way through but her writing style had me from the start. She invested so much in her characters in the first few pages that I feel like I knew them, and when tragedy struck I felt an emotional response that crime novels don't usually bring out in me.

Nancy wrote: "Insurmountable is right. Sheesh! Hopefully that discussion will be well attended since so many people voted for it...."

I'm in.

Have you seen the TV series? That's what made me try the books as it was also excellent

Jason Isaacs plays Jackson Brodie and he's fantastic. Unfortunate that there were only two seasons.

I was only going to read the first few chapters when I started reading this book over breakfast, but I couldn't put Magpie Murders down. I'm halfway through the novel and here it is 3:30 in the afternoon. I must say I could have screamed along with the narrator on discovering the last chapter of the book was missing.

After staying up way too late, I finished Magpie Murders this morning. It was entertaining (I liked the 1955 mystery better) but not great. Two things:

1) I figured out the who early on, but not the why
2) I almost laughed when he writes about not liking coincidences ("particularly not in murder mysteries").... and then proceeds to do just that to get the main character on the trajectory to solving the murder.

not my favorite mystery this year, but not too overly awful.

That's a good one. There's another locked-room mystery (by Seishi Yokomizo) coming out later this year -- The Village of Eight Graves.

Patty | 4455 comments I’ve read his books The Honjin Murders and The Inugami Clan. I will need to find the one you mentioned. I love his character: he reminds me a little bit of Columbo.

If you can find the film adapted from Inugami Clan, you should watch it. I've seen both versions (the original and the remake); the 1976 movie is the best.

The 2006 title is "The Inugamis." I think I ended up having to buy the 1976 film on dvd.

You're welcome. I don't ever think to tell people that most of the films we buy need a multi-region format player. We've had ours forever so it's another thing you need to watch out for.

message 1025: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 2552 comments I bought a multi-region player from Amazon since I get lots of DVDs/Bluerays from amazon.co.uk and amazon.fr. I was able to watch Downton Abbey at least 6 months before US residents could due to this.

Most of our dvds are from China/Hong Kong/Taiwan/Japan; I also love giallo films so we have a lot of Italian stuff as well. Recently we had to replace our blu-ray player, so we made that one multi-region as well. It's certainly handy.

Just finished Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore, which I might be able to fit in the mystery hole if I had a plain to shave the edges and maybe a mallet to drive it in.

Just started, Kill Creek by Scott Thomas which has a (cough) killer premise: Four horror writers on a publicity stunt stay the night at a house famous for being haunted. On Halloween. Now you know, that can't be good.
