Still haven't returned to crime reading, but I'll be getting there when I start The Shooting Party likely by the end of the week. There's also a new show on Britbox I want to watch that follows the books by Peter James (Grace) so I picked up his Dead Simple to read before starting the tv series.

Finished The Dangers of Smoking in Bed: Stories, also a reread of Stephen Gregory's The Cormorant and currently working on Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night by Julian Sancton. On tap: Valancourt has just released a collection of stories in a book called Creatures of Another Age that I'm looking forward to reading.

The Best Man to Die by Ruth Rendell.

Eventually I'll read one of her stand-alones, but I'm finding the Wexford books enjoyable, especially for the relationship between him and the aptly named Inspector Burden.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting WIN, the new hardcover release from Harlan Coben. It features Winsor Horne Lockwood III, the best friend of Coben's main character Myron Bolitar. Very enjoyable so far. I hope that Coben opts to give Win his own series.

Inspector Jury #8, OK to read as a stand-alone. I like the Jury series quite a lot but this is by far the poorest example I've read yet. Melrose Plant is hardly included and the ending is just awful. I found the book confusing and a great many plot items are not cleared. Not recommended.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting SATORI by Don Winslow, which serves as a prequel to the 1979 novel SHIBUMI by Trevanian (aka Rodney Whitaker). I have read a lot of Winslow’s stuff over the last few years and really enjoyed it. And I thought Trevanian’s novel THE MAIN (1976) was excellent. We will see if Winslow can do his usual magic with another writer’s character.

Lucas Davenport #31, OK to read as a stand-alone. Really 1/2 and 1/2, Davenport and Virgil Flowers. Sandford hasn't slowed down one bit, this is a dynamite police procedural/thriller. Maybe a small bit too much technical stuff about diving but overall, 5 stars, highly recommended.

Spurred by the new film of it, I've started Those Who Wish Me Dead by Michael Koryta. I've read The Cypress House and The Ridge and enjoyed them, especially the latter which reads like an old-fashioned horror movie put into writing. I'm impressed with Koryta's concise prose and ability to sketch situation and character economically.
