Read this from :school library 1970s Scotland - YA supernatural detective story 1970s Partly set in Old Scotland Yard - seems to be a parallel world hidden within the modern Scotland Yard. A villain records messages in bathroom and they all end with a flushing sound.

Could it have been "Old Ireland Yard" instead? With identical twin Irish redhead detectives?

If so it might be Scare Power by William Vivian Butler, which I'm pretty sure has the eerie otherworldly noise on the villain's recorded messages that turns out to be a flushing toilet.

Thank you - This could well be it - I started looking elsewhere and again the red headed Irish twins were mentioned - having had a look at the kinds of books mentioned in the same place (and the fact that the cover looks familiar!) I think we might be into something - have found a copy, so let’s see once it arrives.
