Amy | 12963 comments OK - I am about to update everything I found, again, your eagle eyes might help. But here are possible Buddy reads I caught....

Diana H - You and KateNZ have Beartown on the list, only you have it in number 7, and Kate in #1 - you should coordinate if you choose to. Also, American Marriage has a few readers already in position 1, and a few readers for Nine Perfect Strangers in position 5. You don't have to switch to read with these people, but you can if you want.

Kate - Also seems to want to read American Marriage, which has some readers already on it for position one - so if you like you can switch out Beartown to match Diana, and join them. Also, Clockmakers Daughter, which you have at 10, others are reading in position 12.

Charlotte and Joy - Joy has Weight of Ink at number 2, if you wish to coordinate. I definitely think you should put two new ones in the ones that the slots are empty - so you have them if the number gets called. OK -I am about to update the top list. Let me know, and let me know if I missed anything. Everyone's eyes will help....

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) If I join in, can I read whatever I want? Or do I need to coordinate with the gorup? And, just in case no one saw my previous question, do I need to post my 12 books here once I've chosen them?

message 53: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Meli - you have Between the World and Me at #11, while there appears to be one already at number 8. But since no one else has signed up, maybe if someone does, they bend with you.

I think I got them all so far, and edited the list in number one! Just in case people want to add or switch things around to match.

Guess what? JoyD agreed to be our first number picker for January. But I want to wait till closer to the end of the month when it feels like our lists are more solidified, and to see who else joins us. She will pick her number choice at the time I post the new thread for the year, and she and I can coordinate that.

message 54: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Yes - I got that one in! Stranger Beside Me. I was editing while you were writing.

Jenni - at any time. But if you want to make a list now, and you don't have to read them, or read them as they come up, you can look at the list forming in number one, or match other people's lists to create a new buddy read if you like. Just pick any 12, and if you like you can number them to match other people. Let me know, or if I catch them - I will continually edit the top, so we know which Buddy reads are going to fly. The newly refined list of Buddy reads will be at the top of the official unofficial thread for Trim 2021, along with the picking list. We are just planning here, so I wanted there to be a separate thread when we are kicking off the start. Any questions, let me know, and I am happy to help. Even on the phone, to sort it out. I will make a personal concierge call.

message 55: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Forgive me - yes you can read (or not read) whatever you want. Does not have to be remotely related to our lists. You can post a list and never ever do them. You can not post and keep a private list. But If you want to, post them, do it here on this handy dandy planning thread. Forgive me if my head was full and I needed to re-read the question.

message 56: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) No problem. Thank you so much for your help.

message 57: by Meli (last edited Dec 21, 2020 01:53PM) (new)

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Oopsie! I will go back and fix it. Must've really wanted to read that one :P I just switched 8 and 11, but I don't see that anyone else has Between the World And Me Anymore (yet).

@Jenni - I will say you might as well sign up and post your list because since it is not official you lose nothing by skipping a month or all. This year in 2020 for the challenge I think I only read 2 of the books picked because I got too busy with book clubs and whatnot. So there is really no pressure (except the pressure you put on yourself).

message 58: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3171 comments Thanks Amy for all of your efforts to keep this going and connecting us on potential buddy reads!!

I did okay with this challenge this year. I'm on my 10th book from my list but few were read in the month they were picked. I'm going to revamp my list for this year but keep what I think is my remaining buddy read.

message 59: by Jen K (last edited Dec 22, 2020 05:53PM) (new)

Jen K | 3171 comments My 2021 list:

I tried my best to match numbers with others if there is overlap if there is interest in a buddy read. Trying to be better with those this year with PBT done.

1. The Reluctant Fundamentalist
2. Ghana Must Go*
3. Death Is Hard Work
4. Last Night in Nuuk
5. The Elegance of the Hedgehog*
6. The Wolf and the Watchman
7. Cockroaches*
8. Salt Houses
9. A Tale for the Time Being*
10, No Be From Hia
11. Small Country
12. The Stationery Shop

Very excited to read international this year!

Amy | 12963 comments JenK, you did awesome across the board in every single challenge including unofficial trim - and as a new member and extremely strong purple team reader! I picked you as one of our 11 number pickers. honestly I started to count it up, but my eyes fried. But there were clearly 11 consistent readers, and quite a few 12 for 12’s and a lot that came close. If I name names, I’m going to get some of them wrong and then feel really bad. But I’m pretty sure the 12 for 12 included myself, Kelly, Joy, Oliver, and Cindy. And I thought Fran too. Everyone else either also did or came super close. I think you also have a bunch of buddy reads or ones that connect with others. I’ll do my best to edit them when I get my computer back up.

message 61: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4112 comments Thanks so much Amy - I’ll stick with my list for now as I’m all about reducing pressure in my life! But it’s good to know what’s on other people’s lists so if I want to join a buddy read I’ll just do so, and put something else in place of that book.

You've got some thick books on these lists! I enjoyed Brothers K and The Stand. And Cutting For Stone was my top read last year.

Jenny, you have some really interesting looking historical fiction on your list! The Lady and the Poet is on my Want To Read list, but I don't think it's on my actual shelves yet. I'll have to double-check. The Fatal Tree looks great, I'll need to look into that one a little more deeply.

Yea... the plan was to get some chunksters off my shelf and to stop being intimidated by them. Didn't get many thick books read in 2020... we'll see how 2021 goes.

I don't usually do buddy reads, so my list is all my own! :-)

message 68: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments I think I am mostly updated through JenK and Jenni. So far so good...

message 69: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments My eyes are frying - but I really think I got them all. AJ and BC got a few more matches, as did BnB, and Diana is scoring higher than she knows. I think I need to re-check on Sally. She's new and I think the concept was confusing. She may have posted too early to see what was happening here.

message 70: by Shelly (last edited Dec 22, 2020 02:50PM) (new)

Shelly | 947 comments I have 24 titles, so I have 2 lists of 12 ( It makes it easier for me to see them each on a separate line). I am viewing this with total flexibility in getting to some/all of these, modifying, pulling for other challenges, but numbered to possibly work in some buddy reads. Amy, if you catch some other possible buddy reads, I will move them into the first 12.

1. Supreme Inequality: The Supreme Court's Fifty-Year Battle for a More Unjust America
2. Ninth House *
3. Apeirogon
4. The Hate U Give *
5. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
6. Hamnet
7. The Vanishing Half
8. A Farewell to Arms
9. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents
10. The Dream Daughter *
11. All Systems Red
12. The Stationery Shop

1. The City We Became
2. 12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You
3. Gold
4. Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to-Zion Journey Through Every National Park
5. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
6. This Is How You Lose the Time War
7. Nothing to See Here
8. This Tender Land
9. The Brothers K
10. Crocodile on the Sandbank
11. Big Little Lies
12. Just Kids

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I just found my way to the 2020 thread and thought it was the beginning of the official unofficial 2021 thread and I was so confused after I posted why there was 16 pages of comments already. Then, I realized my mistake, lol. Oopsies!

message 72: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I only did 4/12 of my unofficial 2020 TBR Trim. Still waffling on participating in this for 2021.
One one side I'm trying to avoid "obligation reads" vs leaving mood reading.

On the other side, it's so fun to check the list, the number, and participate with the group!

message 73: by Amy (new)

I'm still #104 on the library hold list and I put it on hold in September. Will join if it comes in time.

message 75: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Just updated for Shelley and here is what I noticed:

Shelley and Charlotte - you both have Brothers K on your lists.
Shelley and JenK both have Stationary Shop, Shelley at 12, and Jen at 10, but Jen might want to switch to you, because you have joined the ever growing buddy read for Dream Daughter at #10.

I could swear I saw some of these on folk's list. Aperigon, 12 ways your phone, Book Woman, maybe This Tender Land. I know I saw all four of these, and possibly two more. But I just couldn't find them. We need more eagle eye help. But we are so far caught up on editing up through Shelley's list.....

message 76: by Shelly (new)

3. - Already Read -
4. The Count of Monte Cristo
5. Nine Perfect Strangers
6. - Already Read -
7. Rebecca
8. A Bend in the Road
9. The Brothers K
10. The Night Circus

When we originally did Trim a couple of years ago there was a mini challenge for most pages read and I loaded my list up with chunky books that I already had on my shelf. Last year and this year I haven't added anything different from that original list. I didn't get most of the ones from last year read but still plan on trying to finish them as part of this year.

I have some short books I'm planning on reading this year so they should offset. And I've decided I'm listening to the 52 hours of the audible version of Count of Monte Cristo rather than read it.

Shelly - I'm happy to flip my list and put 12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You at number 3. And if you end up reading early, that's fine too. This will be the third year this book is on my Trim list, so I'm determined to read it - LOL!

Maybe #3 will get called in Jan and we can both read it for mental health!

message 85: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Friends - how long should I wait to see if more folks sign up? I’m going to put out a note to Linda C. I forgot to mention her, but she rocked the challenge too last year. Either others that we should specifically wait for or reach out to? Maybe Kelly too. Anyone who is on that list of lemon, to make sure that we got everyone who wants to play. Not that folks can’t join on later. I just noticed it was quiet today. And I’d like to see how many days that continues. But I’m open for thoughts here.

message 86: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12191 comments Amy, I was wondering that as well and if you had set a date for choosing January's number.

message 87: by Jen (new)

Jen (jentrewren) | 1125 comments I still have a couple to finish for 2020 including the dreadful Baba Yaga which keep sending me to sleep and has taken 6 months. Anyone with insomnia I strongly recommend it. I was super busy with work this year so I just checked the numbers and tagged the books to my shelf but didn't report in. Next year will be no different for me but if my list gets done I'll be happy.

I did accidentally read a couple of this year's list without them being drawn so will replace Thin Air and The Binding with others I want to read.

1. A Dog's Journey: Film Tie-In
2. Galápagos
3. The Fireman
4. Horns
5. Rise - The Complete Newsflesh Collection
6. The Hatching
7. Murder Beyond the Grave
8. NOS4A2
9. Picnic at Hanging Rock
10. Edgar Sawtelle
11. Dracula, the Un-Dead
12. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

message 88: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8455 comments Just a note ... several of these are also on my Fly the Skies list and I"ll read them in that order, regardless of Trim # called.

So I may read a book in January that is on a number that isn't called. And I may delay the number called in February until August if that's when it fits my Fly the Skies plan.

So, while I may match up a couple of books with others who also want to read them, I may not be participating in buddy reads, if those books don't fall in the right order in re Fly the Skies.

message 89: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Of course BC - this is the no pressure challenge. We will all be shifting things around in different orders......

BnB. It is starting to slow down - I welcome everyone's thoughts. I wrote to Kelly, and tried to write to Heather and Linda C who were also ass kickers in this challenge last year. But I couldn't find them. Is anyone friends with them who could shoot out a note? Jen just turned up (yay). Maybe see where we are on the 26th? Post the new thread the 27th, and let Joy announce it then? Other thoughts?

I have been doing the challenge this year but with teaching full time including 3 y12 courses, being marker/moderator for the exam board, trying to work on the new psychology curriculum for next year and the COVID crazies reading was all I could manage not updating. Next year looks to be just as busy too but I'll read along and just put the books on my TRIM shelf as I do them.

Looking forward to knocking some more off the TBR in 2021.

message 91: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Now updating those last three Buddy read possibilities. Quiet on Goodreads Christmas morning as it should be.

These are the ones left I swear could match up

Aperigon
This Tender Land
Vanishing Half...

message 92: by Sallys (new)

Sallys | 694 comments Hi. I'm sorry Amy- one more question. Now that I've posted my list do I change it if I see books on other peoples lists that I would like to read? I would definitely do a buddy read for Aperigon.

message 93: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12963 comments Yes, this is why the planning thread is so great. Because if you see other people‘s lists or that other people have signed on for new things are other things things start to shift around. We are using this planning thread now so we can launch it in a couple of days. And of course this is a no pressure things so you can continue to change it as often as you like and whenever. The idea is to get 12 books off your TBR in this creative way.

I too am starting to notice a lot of interest in Aperigon. Which Nancy says takes us somewhere, I think in the Middle East. But I’m starting to think I should add it to my list as well.

message 94: by Amy (new)
