Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments I gave the first book 4 stars and I recall being quite engaged in the story. I consider M.R. Carey to be a fascinating storyteller. I was smitten with The Girl with All the Gifts as my first introduction to his books.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have The Girl with All the Gifts on my TBR.

I think you will like the next Ramparts books too, if you were engaged in the story.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started listening to Second Grave on the Left on Sunday. It had been a while since I listened to the first book in the Charley Davidson series. I had forgotten who she was, but it all came back within the first chapter. I love the Lorelei King narration!

Then, just because I didn’t have any library books within sight, the next Clifton Chronicles audiobook book is available along with an ebook that I cannot even remember requesting. Corrag by Susan Fletcher.

Jannene | 3124 comments Cherie, you just keep rolling. I haven’t been that great of a reader. I got a 7 week old puppy about a month ago and she’s a lot of work.

I have been trying audiobooks when I can. She wants walks and she barks a lot.

I hope to finish a few series. Dom is working extra hours so we aren’t reading that much at all.

message 105: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hang in there, Jannene! Puppies can be a lot of work, but hopefully, she will soon be settled down.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Second Grave on the Left in the Charley Davidson series and put the third book on hold.

I also downloaded and finished the sixth book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, The Burning. I forgot I had put it on hold at my library. It came in before two other owl books. The narrator cracks me up. I pared down my series list in 2018 and removed this series from my list. I put it back on again, since I seem to be able to get them now. They were ALWAYS on hold before.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had a hold on the second book in the Kane Chronicles that came through today. I am using The Throne of Fire for a museum challenge task. I do not see this series on my current list, so either never added it, or took it off in some clean up effort. I will have to go back to the threads and look for it. It looks like I read the first book in 2012. I will start it after I finish Child 44.

I am currently listening to Mightier Than the Sword, the fifth book in the Clifton Chronicles

message 108: by Cherie (last edited Jun 29, 2021 06:21PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading Child 44. The trilogy will be added to my list. It was a page turner!

I just started The Throne of Fire. It made me laugh, remembering how the first book was done. Rick Riordan is very clever. I don’t care if his books are for middle school kids. His stories are fun and his characters feel real - even if the actions and situations are not. They are fun!

I am really liking the Clifton Chronicles story I am listening to. I wish the author would not have to kill off some of his really more likable characters though.

message 109: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Mightier Than the Sword, Clifton Chronicles #5 today and have downloaded #6 from my library site. Book 5 was lots more action filled, at least it felt like it to me. I couldn’t stop listening!

I hope Cometh the Hour will be good as well.

message 110: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am declaring the Clifton Chronicles by Jeffrey Archer dead today. I finished the last two audiobooks as I was trying to beat the heat and DOING NOTHING but laying on my bed or sitting in my chair.

message 111: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Yay, another series killed!!

message 112: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan is back on my list. I removed it in 2018 as a clean up and now I am reading the second book.

message 113: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished the second Kane Chronicles book tonight. It will go on my museum challenge list.

I will be starting The Atlantis World for the Buddy Read monthly challenge tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to jump in and remember the characters and previous activities that took place in the second book when I start the story. I’m not sure how long ago I read the second book. I have some sense of some of the action because I get flash backs occasionally. Strange how that happens, sometimes.

message 114: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments I read the first book 3 yrs ago and have the next 2 on my tbr but haven't managed to get to them yet. I recall that I really enjoyed the "Gene".

message 115: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I read the first Kane Chronicle book in 2012. I enjoyed The Throne of Fire, the second book. It was a light read. I like Riordan's YA humor. Who knows, I might finish the trilogy before the end of the year. ;o)

I read the first "Gene" - The Origin Mystery in 2017 and the second in 2018.

I am going to start a Star Trek - Next Generation book for my museum challenge. I created an Interactive task for it. I am not tracking any of the Star Trek books on my series lists. They are never ending. I am going to start The Light Fantastic. I bought it several years ago.

message 116: by Cherie (last edited Jul 06, 2021 01:13PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am in the middle of listening to the second “Origin” book after starting The Atlantis World for the monthly challenge. I listened to the first book over Friday and Saturday and started the second on Sunday.

I just finished The Light Fantastic, for my museum challenge. It was a great story and now, I find that I need to add another trilogy for the events prior to it. I’ve added the first book to my first-in-series shelf. The trilogy is called Cold Equations and is written by David R. George. I do enjoy his story telling skill. He really brings the Star Trek characters to life!

message 117: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am declaring The Origin Mystery by A.G. Riddle is killed, thanks to my Buddy Vicki, picking the third book in the trilogy, The Atlantis World, for me to read for the monthly challenge.

I started the third book in the Sherlock Holmes Adventure series for my museum challenge.

message 118: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Look at you go!!

message 119: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Jannene!

message 120: by Cherie (last edited Jul 15, 2021 04:27PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I’ve gotten my Sherlock Holmes fix now, so on to some more Mma Ramotswe pleasure reading while I decide to kill off The Sherlock Holmes Adventures or not. The book I just finished, The Devil’s Due is the third book and the last one currently published, which is the original criteria for killing off a series. The fourth book is to be published later this year.

Maybe after I finish How to Raise an Elephant, which is an orphan read for The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency @ #21. Both books are for my museum challenge.

message 121: by Cherie (last edited Jul 19, 2021 05:42PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to the first Detective William Warwick story, Nothing Ventured. It was a good story and I liked William very much. I will be adding the series to my list and have the second audiobook on hold at my library.

I am 50% done with How to Raise an Elephant.

I will start The Quiet Game as soon as the audiobook files are finished downloading. This is the first book in the Pen Cage series by Greg Iles. It has been on my library wish list for a long time and finally rose to the top slot.

message 122: by Cherie (last edited Jul 19, 2021 05:43PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished How to Raise an Elephant. I guess I need to check and see if the author has released another story yet. If not, then I am finally caught up with the orphan books for The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.

I should be sleeping but I can’t seem to settle down.

I am going to start Death and the Maiden. This is supposed to be the final novel in the Mistress of the Art of Death Series. This book was finished by the author’s daughter, Samantha Norman. I created an interactive task for it for my museum challenge, but I may change it to another task.

message 123: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Today, I finished The Quiet Game - audiobook
and
Death and the Maiden - ebook.

Penn Cage jumped onto my series list and the last book in The Mistress of the Art of Death is a wrap for another orphan book.

message 124: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading Q Are Cordially Invited. This was a StarTrek Next Generation novella about Picard and Beverly Crusher’s wedding in 23xx. Q took them on an “adventure” the evening before their wedding ceremony. It was a fun story although I had to look up some of the characters from previous TV stories. I have not read as much in the Next Generation trope, with a few exceptions about Data.

message 125: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Back to Narnia today with The Horse and His Boy while I wait for August 15 to start The Labyrinth of the Spirits.

message 126: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Feels like a few years later, but I finished The Horse and His Boy. Prince Caspian will be up next - as soon as we get a task for a prince (in the title or the story).

The second audiobook of William Warwick is downloaded. I will not start it until I am done with my current audiobook for my museum challenge.

message 127: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my museum audiobook read, so I have decided to start Hidden in Plain Sight. This is the second William Warwick story.

message 128: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Hidden in Plain Sight. It was a fascinating story. I liked it better than the first in the series. Was it because I already knew the characters? I don’t think so. It was a better story because of the police procedures. I have the third audiobook on hold. 8 weeks...

message 129: by Cherie (last edited Aug 09, 2021 02:56PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have started The Anatomist's Apprentice by Tessa Harris Another audiobook narrated by Simon Vance. This is the first in the series for Dr. Thomas Silkstone Mystery. It is excellent so far!!!

message 130: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Wow - that was a fascinating story. My granddaughter listened with me and we finished this morning. Every time we thought it was solved, something else happened. More Dr. Silkstone please!

message 131: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It looks like there are 6 books in the Dr. Thomas Silkwood Mystery series. My library does not have any but the first one. I recommended the next three audiobooks. I have the second book on my TBR list but I am not adding the series to my list. I will see what is on Kindle first.

message 132: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments My library only has the first book in Kindle/audio versions. I think the print versions are available for the rest of them. The second book is available for $1.99 for the Kindle version.

message 133: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Roz - Put it on your list to listen to. You will like it. Vance is fantastic. Much better than even the previous one I just listened to.

The western book I am listening to makes me really appreciate Vance. The narrator is good but hard to tune in. I have to listen with every muscle. It is a disturbing story. My granddaughter says that it is not gruesome but listening to three guys and their horses and oxen dying of thirst while they trudge on looking for a little muddy stream is not a pretty picture. Their tongues turning black and sticking out so that they cannot close their mouths. What is that, if not gruesome?

message 134: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Turning Angel - Penn Cage - ebook is downloaded to my tablet. I am not ready to start it yet.

message 135: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments That was the first Penn Cage book I read and it is still my favourite. Enjoy 😉

message 136: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Good to hear about the Greg Isles book, Margo!

My library hold on the latest Mary Russell & Sherlock Holmes audiobook is download and waiting for me now too. Castle Shade will be an orphan. I killed off the series three books ago.

I have two books on the go and two waiting. Still waiting to see what the toppler theme will be and then the buddy read for the fourth book in The Cemetery of Lost Books starts.

message 137: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1509 comments So many books. So little time. *sigh*

message 138: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too true, Shirley!

I started listening to the MR & SH audiobook. Nothing else to do as we sit out the latest heat wave hitting the Pacific Northwest. It was 106 yesterday and did not start to cool down below 80 until 1am this morning. Keeping the house closed up with the fans going to move the air - listening is all the energy I can spare. I have been working outside only in the early morning, just after sunrise. The smoke from wildfires is really smelly this morning. It is 5:40am and 69 outside. I will close up the house soon as soon as it gets light. It is still 77 in the house.

message 139: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1795 comments Ugg, sympathy on the heat and smoke. We have it up here too. Smelled like there was a campfire in our house yesterday.

message 140: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments Whew, 106, that's brutal. We're having a bit of a heat wave, but nothing like that. I think it's the humidity that gets to me. I've been going for my walk by 7 am and still come back dripping.
The only thing to do is drink lots of cool water, take cold showers, find a breeze or ac and don't move. And hope it ends soon.

message 141: by Cherie (last edited Aug 14, 2021 01:42PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I didn’t notice the campfire smell as bad this morning. It was cooler yesterday. Only 99 but no cool down until early in the morning. Absolutely no wind or breeze. It is 11am and at 80 already. I worked outside for a while and then came inside to shower.

Castle Shade is an interesting story so far but v-e-r-y slow. It feels like Jenny Sterlin is reading slower than in the last books. I almost wish I had not canceled my hold on the ebook.

message 142: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Lord Cherie, "only" 99f is more more heat than we ever see here. It must be horrible with the smoke outside. Stay safe!

message 143: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments 99f is a typical August/early September "hot" day for us here, Margo.
Of course, the 106 was still LOTS better than the 114 and 115 days we had a couple of weeks ago. The smoke just makes it feel worse, somehow.

message 144: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Still listening to Castle Shade. The story got better! 12 chapters left. Destiny is listening with me.

I started The Labyrinth of the Spirits with the buddy read group. Didn't get too far reading yesterday. I do not feel lost, just scrambling to remember the characters.

I pushed the hold way out on the next William Warwick book (#3) and signed up for a give away copy of #4. Still waiting to start Turning Angel. I need to finish the monthly challenge book(s) I have started.

message 145: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just finished listening to Castle Shade. Another orphan off my list. Good ending to the story!

I thought I was going to use this one for my Museum 8, About task until I realized that it needed to feature a queen AND have "fantasy" in the MBP. Back to my original choice of Red Queen and another potential add to my list. ;o)

message 146: by Roz (last edited Aug 16, 2021 05:31PM) (new)

Roz | 4547 comments Oh, I enjoyed the Red Queen series.

message 147: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments LOL, Roz! That makes me feel better about the Red Queen.

message 148: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments Actually I thought you had read it already. Don't know why. I was surprised when I saw you hadn't. I like looking at other people's lists, especially the series they've committed to. Some have a lot of fantasy or YA. Others like crime or action or romance.
Ah, the Red Queen....YA, action, fantasy. Has it all. I'm planning on reading #4.5 Broken Throne in the series for Museum 3, Location.

message 149: by Cherie (last edited Aug 28, 2021 11:08PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Turning Angel - Penn Cage is back on hold again. It expired before I got a chance to read it and I had to send it back to the library because someone else had a hold on it.

Oh well, I can finally concentrate on The Labyrinth of the Spirits without having something hanging over my head.

message 150: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Well - I got Turning Angel back from the library and re-down loaded it. I spent the last three days reading it, only to realize that I had not added it to my Currently Reading status list. It was INTENSE!
