Darren (dazburns) | 2169 comments I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but I'm currently nearing the end of Bernal Diaz's The Conquest of New Spain which is a first-hand account of Cortes's forays into Mexico in 1519-21
some jaw-droppingly amazing stuff going on, that if you made it into a movie would be considered ludicrously far-fetched
The Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Díaz del Castillo

Thank you for this comment, Darren. I have wondered if this might be worth reading. It has been a long time since I have read any of the Spanish explorers' writings. This I do not think I have read and your comment is so inviting. Adding this book to my 2025 Bingo card.

Cynda | 5250 comments I am currently reading King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa by Adam Hochschild. Being that I have some knowledge of this experience and had long ago read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, I knew what to expect. I may now want to reread that novel and maybe even read The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. . . My reading card for 2025 fills up.

Nice work, Pam. Some of those letter can be a bit tricky, I found!

I've finished all my challenges and have some long, slow weeks ahead until the new year, so I decided to go ahead and plunge into some new books, not waiting for 2025 to get to them. I'm reading The Book at War: How Reading Shaped Conflict and Conflict Shaped Reading by Andrew Pettegree, which is really interesting so far.

I also started the Aubrey and Maturin series with Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. I had no idea it would be so good - I breezed through it and then read Post Captain the next day. I didn't care for the plot line as much, but it was still good. I'm on to #3 today. I'll have to take a break at some point, or I'll burn out.

And for a complete change of pace I'm rereading Mrs. Tim Christie by D.E. Stevenson.

Terry | 2470 comments If you are looking for a delightful change of pace to your reading, I suggest Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice to Murderers written bt Jessie Q. Sutanto, and excellently narrated by Eunice Wong in the audio version. I just finished laughing my way through this murder mystery. So much fun!

Oh, I read that years ago and remember enjoying it! I'll have to add it to my list of ideas for "U", that's always a hard one. Thanks for reminding me of it.

Ayush (ayushraj) | 34 comments I just started reading Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie. I have had this book for a while now and thought that what better time than to read it now with Christmas approaching. But I came across a very unexpected coincidence.....this book is split into 7 Chapters dated from 22nd December to 28th December.
Today is 22nd Dec and hence, I am wondering if I can actually read those chapters on the exact same dates lol. It will be a challenge though as it's tough to stop reading Christie's work, especially once the murder mystery builds up.

Nancy | 0 comments Reading Woodrow Wilson: The Light Withdrawn by Christopher Cox (2024)

Just cringe-inducing to listen to the white supremacist views held by T. Woodrow Wilson as a young man. This belief that white people are racially superior to others is in the DNA of America. I wonder if Wilson will modify his views during his presidency...as leader of 'all' Americans. I doubt it.

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2310 comments Started The Wizard of the Kremlin today and have already read 33%. It is great. Very well written. A unique dark ironic style. Potentially top 5 for 2024 for me. It seems it is the only book by Giuliano da Empoli that has been translated to any language I know.

Not in this group. It is on the February poll, but it does not look like it will win. It does look like a very interesting book. I hope we will read it someday.

This is my first jump into the Lord of the Rings. (I know, I am way way late to the game). But I've read quite a few Christie novels and she is one of my favorite authors, but somehow this one has eluded me until now. But this is my first time reading both of these books.
