Books in this category will feature a character (or characters) with a disability. There are many different types of disabilities, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment, mental health disabilities, various types of chronic disease, etc.

What an amazing woman, and though I may see her injuries as a disability, she proves everyday they are not to her. Inspiring.

Sarah Fisher (sarahloubooks) | 15 comments I plan to read ‘Disfigured’ by Amanda Lexus which is a non-fiction book looking at negative portrayals of disabilities in fairy tales, looking at everything from The Brothers Grimm to Disney. I’ve heard great things about it.

Tommy is from the Charlotte North Carolina area where I live. The book portrayed his lifelong struggle with food addiction and morbid obesity.

Ben Truong | 60 comments Completion Post:

Just finished reading: "The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism" by Naoki Higashida (★★★★☆), is an autobiographical novel written by Naoki Higashida, a nonverbal autistic person from Japan and translated by K.A. Yoshida and David Mitchell.

Higashida's narrative has a clarity and wisdom that is surprising for such a young person (he was thirteen when he wrote this book). Other times the reader is reminded of his age, when he earnestly pleads on behalf of himself and others with autism for understanding and patience. The result is a mixture of invaluable anecdotal information, practical advice and whimsical self-expression.

I read a Mind Unraveled by Kurt Eichenwald, he chronicles his journey with Epilepsy and the struggles he had with being properly diagnosed. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read for me, he spoke so much of what I felt as a teenager and young adult struggling with Epilepsy. So this book was simply amazing for me!

Traci (scraptraci) | 151 comments A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline

I read A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline I really enjoyed this book while several of our book club members were so so on it. I think I liked it more because I taught my son's elementary class about the painting as part of their art awareness program so I had an attachment to the painting

message 47: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 59 comments I read The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. A memoir of sorts. He had a stroke and became a quadriplegic. He managed to "dictate" this book to someone who would speak each letter of the alphabet until he blinked his eye (the one thing he could move) to indicate that this was the next letter of the word he intended for the writing. Even just knowing this makes this a worthwhile read.
