I read this book when I was about 7 or 8, which was about 16 years ago in ~2004. I know this book is much older than that because I'm pretty sure it was my grandpa's so maybe from the 60s or 70s.

It was a young teen to young adult I think? I'm not 100% sure cause I got it as a hand me down.

This sounds like The Runaway Robot. It has the family leaving behind on Jupiter's moon Ganymede.
