Read in the late 80's early 90's from the public library, and it seemed well used at that point. I do not remember many details but I think the main characters were a girl and boy, young teenish. They were looking for elemental items to help in the fight vs. the dark / evil. The items were shaped like a squished donut, circular, w/ an ovoid cross section, and a hole in the middle with an + / cross / x in the middle. The fire element thing looked like fire, water like water, etc. For some reason I think I remember the kids standing next to an old tree with an old man looking into a fire as the fire element was freed / exposed? It may be part of a series.

The Dark Is Rising Sequence, by Susan Cooper? The book in which the talismans are found is The Dark is Rising and the conclusion is Silver on the Tree.

I looked the series up and got the highlights. It is the book. Thank you. I have been wondering about it for years. My son is 9 my daughter is 7 and I wanted to share it with them. I am glad I found this site!
