Lori Keeton | 1496 comments The goal is to focus your reading on literary classics.

Read a classic that fits the description of a square. You may NOT count the same book twice for different categories in this challenge. Each book can be applied to only one square, even if it fulfills the requirements of multiple squares. All books read to mark off squares must be finished in 2021.

Challenge Levels:
Level One Bingo
Four Corners: Mark off the four outside corners of the Bingo board.
OR
Five-in-a-Row: Mark off five squares in a row. This can be done horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Level Two Bingo
Small Box: Mark off all the 9 inner squares of the board (including the free square), leaving blank the 16 outside border squares.

Level Three Bingo
Outside Box: Mark off all 16 of the outer squares, leaving blank the 9 inner squares.

Level Four Bingo
Blackout! Mark off all twenty-five squares of the board.

Sara | 95 comments Hi Lori! How nice to see some of my all-time favorites on a fellow newbie's list :) Stoner is amazing, I'm sure you'll enjoy reading it and hope the very same for Gone with the Wind, I love them both dearly.
Daphne du Maurier pretty much never disappoints either, she's actually one of my favorite authors. I look forward to following you and hearing your thoughts on Lonesome Dove if you end up reading it as I also have it planned for next year. Happy planning and reading!

Thank you Sara!! I loved Rebecca so I look forward to My Cousin Rachel.
I really should read Lonesome Dove as I've only ever read Terms of Endearment. I live in Texas and for several years near where McMurtry calls home. So, I think we should be able to compare notes!!

message 16: by Brina (new)

Brina I love your list, Lori. And I never thought to use Doctor Zhivago as classic romance. I last read in high school, it’s been far too long but I keep procrastinating. Just having both McCullers and McCullough makes your board special. Also Barnes’ Sense of an Ending for Booker is a great book. Happy reading.

Thanks, Brina! I just read McCullers The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter this year and was blown away. There are so many possibilities here and it’s been fun getting ideas from other members too!

Lori Keeton | 1496 comments What are some suggestions for classic satire or comedy? Not usually a category I choose but I did enjoy Catch-22. would P G Wodehouse work for comedy? I've read some of his work too.

message 22: by Angie (new)

Angie | 496 comments Great looking list. We have a few in common for next year (Wharton, Austen). I keep hearing a lot of buzz about Angle of Repose. I need to look into it. Good luck with your challenge!

I have The Towers of Trebizond and Candide down for myself, and The Dud Avocado and The Innocents Abroad also come to mind. Vonnegut, Wilde, and Swift all have works that are fair game.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, Aubrey. Very much appreciated. This is a hard category but it may boil down to what I actually own. We’ll see. I have a kindle copy of The Innocents Abroad.

Shirley (stampartiste) | 1008 comments Welcome to the Bingo challenge, Lori! One word of warning... it is very addicting... once you start, you'll never be able to stop. 😄

I LOVE your choices of books! It looks like we share the same taste in books... I have either read many of your choices, I have them on my Bingo for next year, or they are on my "to-read one day" list. I've never read Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad, but it's been on my TBR list for quite a while. I think it would be a great, lighthearted fun read!

Have fun with your many wonderful choices!

Philina | 1085 comments Welcome to your first Bingo, Lori!

You've got some great books on your list. Stoner was special, Sense & Sensibility is my favorite Austen and the Moonstone was a lot of fun as well. All Quiet on the Western Front should be read by everybody and I also greatly enjoyed Tess and My Cousin Rachel.

The most important thing is to have fun, though ;-)

Nice list so far. I love to make lists, yet I also change what I read as I go. I see you have The Bronze Bow for your Newberry. I also am using this book on my list! I have had a copy on my shelf for a few years now, so this is the year to read it!

Anne, I am so glad you enjoyed Bingo this year. I am a bit of a competitor and I will challenge myself to meet a goal. But I want to approach this with a mind to enjoy myself and not worry about checking off my reads. Are you playing again this year? I’m not sure I’ve seen yours yet.

Hi Lynn! Thank you. I too am a list maker. I have many on my phone for various things and of course for books! I think at least one other person is reading The Bronze Bow. Would be nice to see what we all think. I homeschooled my kids many years ago briefly and I keep thinking I remember this book on our reading list. This was years before I joined GR. Will be interesting to see if I remember reading it.

Yes, I'll be playing. Mine is full of different possibilities for each square. I'm such a mood reader I prefer to have options. I set mine up pretty early. Maybe that's why you haven't seen it.

message 43: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton | 1496 comments Oh good! I will go investigate! I am like you, a mood reader. I’m starting the year with the book I’ve been meaning to read forever, Gone with the Wind.
Otherwise, I’ll try to go with the flow of my mood.

message 46: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton | 1496 comments 11% finished with my B2 book made into a movie Gone with the Wind. So far, it is a very easy to read book. I will take my time but hope to be finished by the end of January. Also reading other books at the same time, which I've just learned to do. Another skill that GR groups has taught me!

Anne, I hope you can fit it in this year. I picked up a beautiful edition with nice, big pages! Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
