Hey all!

This is going up early this year as we are looking at changing some stuff up and want your input first! So instead of posting a second one of these types of things later doing it all now. It has been a crazy and strange year for everyone but I hope we all read something that made it even a little brighter.

1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2020 reading goal?
2. Number Of Books You Read:
3. Genre You Read The Most From:

Gord | 1014 comments 1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2020 reading goal?
-I'm definitely on track to complete my reading goal and exceed it.

2. Number Of Books You Read:
-380 and counting so far

3. Genre You Read The Most From:
-Probably fantasy

4. What were your favorite books this year?
Oh boy where to start.
-Battle Angel Alita (series)
-Sailor Moon (series)
-Kate Daniel (series)
-Sparrow Hill Road (book)
-Silence of the Lambs (book)
-Young Miss Holmes (series)
-Swan Song (book)
- Guild Codex (series)
-Buried (book)
- Hinomaru Sumo (series)
That's not everything but it's a good list

5. What were your least favorites?
-Making me revisit the pain of this year huh. Alright here are the duds:
The worst by far was Fallen. It was my only one star book this year.

The two star books that were just bad
Hush, Hush
The Cyborg's Secret Baby
Misty Circus
Z-Boat
Moon Called (Mercy Thompson comic book)
The Witch of Blackbird Pond
My Life as a Walrus Whoopee Cushion
Something Wicked This Way Comes
It's a charmed Life

6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone?
-I feel weird recommending things to people as I don't know how others taste line up to mine. That and my taste are all over the place.

7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone?
-Thanks to challenges, yes, most definitely yes.

8. Did you discover any new genres or authors?
-Maybe not new genres as there isn't a lot that really surprises me but definitely new authors. With the amount that I read finding new authors is a given.

9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
-Nope. Generally if I've started a book I finish it. There might have been a few DNF's that I started and tossed after a few pages but I don't count those.

10. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
-Nothing off the top of my head but I don't really follow new releases much. To much other stuff to read.

11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year?
-At this point I'm mainly focused on cleaning up books needed for challenges ending this year.

12. Best Series Starter of 2020:
-No idea off the top of my head.

13. Best Sequel of 2020:
-See above response.

14. Best Series Ender of 2020:
-See above response.

15. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2020 But Will Be Your #1 Priority in 2021?
-Nothing off the top of my head but there are a lot of things I really want to read.

16. Book(s) you are looking most forward to in 2021
-I'm starting a buddy read of the Redwall series next year that I'm rather looking forward to.

17. Going forward, is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?
-Nothing off the top of my head.

18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?
-Challenges and some of the monthly reads.

19. As far as challenges go, are there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favourite challenge we currently run?
-A multipart question. I think the challenges here are good honestly. I'm rather a fan of the quarterly challenges even if I never feel like I have enough time. In regards to the quarterly challenges I'd like to throw out an idea if I may. For the spelling options maybe we could use the first letter of the title or the author first/last initial. That way we have a few more options for spelling things out. I find that I end up not being able to use many of the books I read because they don't fit the task and the title isn't a letter I'm looking for. It's something that is used in another challenge group I'm in and it just gives the player some options.

20. Assuming we are adding more challenges would you rather shorter or longer running ones? Would you like to see bimonthly challenges alongside the quarterly and 6 month ones? Or would more year long challenges be preferred?
-I'd probably go for longer running ones myself. I juggle a lot of reading and a lot of challenges at the same time so the less pressure I'm under the better.

21. I know last year there was a suggestion to do a teams challenge. This year got away from me, but would this be something that enough people would want to see in the future?
-I'd probably skip on this. I get my books from the library which means it can take time to get books and then there is finding the time to read them. I'd feel like I was the anchor on the team slowing people down or I'd feel pressured to skip other things I'm reading to keep up with the team.

1. Did you (or will you) reach your 2020 reading goal?
I have far exceeded my goal of 80 books for the year

2. Number Of Books You Read: currently sitting at 114!

3. Genre You Read The Most From: I still read primarily fantasy of one form or another but there was a little more variety thrown in this year.

4. What were your favorite books this year? I definitely loved a bunch more than this but these were my 5 star books this year so far Sleepless, Vol. 1 One of Us Is Next Demon Magic and a Martini (but really any of this series that I read this year fits this), Resistance Women 10 Blind Dates The Alloy of Law The Empire of Gold Bewitched & Betrayed

5. What were your least favorites?
This terribly disappointing 1 star book was the worstLet's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir
But here are a few other 2 stars that disappointed me as well

6. What is one book you would recommend to everyone?
All of Guild Codex!

7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone?
Yes, choosing to read Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things which I loved and then later in the year Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir which I hated. Never been much of a memoir reader.

8. Did you discover any new genres or authors?
Tons of new authors, particularly for comics since I read way more of those this year than normal. Outside of those, I few new to me authors that I will be looking for more of their work include Mandy Robotham Brigid Kemmerer Kester Grant Ashley Elston Kat Cho

9. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
Nothing in particular

10. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?
It got pushed back until next year, looking forward to reading The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks

11. What are some books you want to read before the end of the year?
Beyond what is on my currently reading shelf, I hope to get to The Son of Neptune Ash Princess Allegiant and who knows what else for sure. Maybe some stuff to clean up some challenges

12. Best Series Starter of 2020: A rare change I actually read some new releases this year
The Court of Miracles

13. Best Sequel of 2020:
Alpha Night or One of Us Is Next

14. Best Series Ender of 2020:
I so dont want this series to be over! The Empire of Gold

Not sure, there's a bunch I intended to read this year and havent yet.

16. Book(s) you are looking most forward to in 2021
As far as new releases the ones I have my eye on most are Untitled Winterkeep Psychangling #20 and I'm sure I am missing things.
Otherwise I am looking forward to catching up on the Mercy Thompson series with another group and whatever else catches my attention at the time

17. Going forward, is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?
Since I am the one asking, currently no comment.

18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?
Same as above

19. As far as challenges go, are there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favourite challenge we currently run?
I love PIFM. We are changing up series readalongs and making them more like buddy reads. Beyond that really just looking for input.

20. Assuming we are adding more challenges would you rather shorter or longer running ones? Would you like to see bimonthly challenges alongside the quarterly and 6 month ones? Or would more year long challenges be preferred?
I have a couple of bingo style challenges Im in the process of making and some year long ones in mind.

21. I know last year there was a suggestion to do a teams challenge. This year got away from me, but would this be something that enough people would want to see in the future?
If there is enough interest I am willing to run a 2-3 month team challenge in the new year, possibly starting as early as February. But as these are more work, need to gauge the amount of people who want to be a part of one.

This book was beautiful! I loved the mythology, the author gave those famous characters a lot of depth, and there was a good amount of action. Also I cried a lot 🤷‍♀️😂

7. Did you read anything outside of your comfort zone?

Not this year... I did read a nonfiction, though that one doesn't really count as it was a re-read.

message 6: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1014 comments It's funny, I tried reading Sal and Gabi Break the Universe this year and I bounced off that book so hard. There are books that suck you in from the first page. There are books that take some work to get into and then you are lost in the pages. Then are books like Sal and Gabi Break the Universe. I read maybe 10 pages before I just walked away. It just wasn't clicking with me in the slightest.

Out of curiosity is Last Strand the last book in the Elemental Assassin series or just for the current story arc?

Liliana (lililostinabook) | 2908 comments Mod
I'm actually a little surprised with myself that I enjoyed Sal and Gabi as much as I did. It turned out to be quite character-driven, which is not usually my cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it! It helped that it had a lot of fun characters.

So what Jennifer has said is that this will be the last book in the series... for now. She doesn't know when/if she'll revisit it, but she said that she would like to write novellas in the world from the POV of the supporting characters.

message 8: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1014 comments Huh, maybe I'll have to pick up the series again. The last one I read was book 16 but that was a couple of years ago. It's a great popcorn series.

Elena Granger | 1791 comments Ready to fill the second part of questions :)

17. Going forward, is there anything you would like to see added or changed in this group?
No, it's good!

18. What keeps you active in this group or brings you back to us?
I love reading and books - this is what brought me here for the first time. Now I really like people here and it brings me back :)

19. As far as challenges go, are there enough variety? Are there any you would add or discard? And what is your favourite challenge we currently run?
I used to participate in much more challenges but now it feels like the group has just a right amount to not feel overwhelmed and have time to fill all of them. My favorite one so far is PIFM monthly challenge.

20. Assuming we are adding more challenges would you rather shorter or longer running ones? Would you like to see bimonthly challenges alongside the quarterly and 6 month ones? Or would more year long challenges be preferred?
2-3 month challenges I like the most.

21. I know last year there was a suggestion to do a teams challenge. This year got away from me, but would this be something that enough people would want to see in the future?
Maybe if there is enough people to make teams of.
