I read this book with my son in the early 2000s, but don't know for sure when it was published. I recall it had a lovely opening paragraph. Something about the main character's mother being loving with her because mom knew she was not going to live long and wanted to be sure her daughter would recognize love when she encountered it again. I thnk it was written in first person. Also think it was an author who had published several books and is well-known.
