Looking for a children’s/ya animal rescue fiction series from around the 2000’s. The first two books involved a feral cat colony and a puppy mill respectively. I don’t recall for certain, but I believe the cat colony book was the first.

I particularly recall that in the cat colony book the colony was in danger of being destroyed due to fears of rabies. In the climax, one of the feral cats defends the child (girl?) protagonist from a rabid racoon. The colony is then properly cared fir through trap and release.

I don’t recall much about the puppy mill book, other than that the dogs were rescued in the end and the mill was shut down.

It was available at Scholastic book fairs (which is where I got mine) and had photos of cute animals on the front.

The Vet Volunteers Series by Laurie Halse Anderson looks promising! Book one (Fight for Life) seems to be about a puppy mill and book two (Homeless) about a cat colony.
