Hello Team Joy!

This event's team challenge is focused on finding that good. In this time's team challenge, you and your teammates will be tasked with reading books to go along with positive news stories from 2020.

Each book read for the team will need to connect in some way to one of the positive news stories. The more connections you find, the more points you can earn.

Theme (i.e. age, storyline, topic, etc.): 1 point
Numbers (i.e. dates, article topics, page count, etc.): 1 point
Location: 2 points
Names (incl. authors, characters): 3 points
Title (article subjects found in title of book): 3 points
Objects (found in article and on cover of the book or major plot-point): 3 points
Own Voices: 5 points

Grand Prize!
Finish a book connected to every positive news story below: 75 points

What about pages?
This is a bit of a bonus. For every 1,000 pages read as a group, you earn one wildcard. Wildcards allow you to cross one article off your list, getting you closer to the grand prize!

For more information about our group challenge (including FAQs), check out this thread.

Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

An explanation:
You can record your page count at the top portion of the Tracking tab on the spreadsheet. Every audiobook minute counts as one page.

On the second half, you can put the book title and who read it, and then how it fits for the prompts. It should automatically tabulate the points you earned for each book! Please only post completed books on the Tracking tab!

You can use the planning tab to plan how your books will fit the news articles. Feel free to adjust this tab to fit your group's preferences.

Yay Team Joy! So excited to really join a team this go round and give it my all.

I'm off this week from work and I have a lot of self-care planned (ahem, bubble baths and reading) so hopefully I get through at least 3 books.

I'm really happy for you, Emily! I'm sure that trying to teach in 2020 has earned you plenty of self care time <3

message 5: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Can't wait for it to start tomorrow. I need to catch up again in the overall challenge.

I'm reading Dorothy Must Die. I'm trying to figure out the game and what category it might fit in. I'm not being imaginative enough right now I think.

I'm also planning to read some graphic novels:
Mooncakes
Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale

They are both over 200 pages.

I'm hoping to get through 3 of the Dorothy Must Die books. Books 2 and 3 are:
The Wicked Will Rise
Yellow Brick War

Can't wait to see how it all works.

At first glance, I would count that for "Man Opens Up His Home to Shelter 300 Dogs From a Hurricane" since they both involve a natural disaster but you might be able to find another that has more connections.

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3271 comments I'm planning on starting The Toll tomorrow, but I imagine that will be a tough one to fit in.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11197 comments Mod
I'm smack in the middle of Behold the Dreamers, but my brain is too mushy to look at words right now lol. I'll slot it in for potential categories tomorrow, although I do hope to finish it by tomorrow after... it's so good!

message 9: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments I'm in the middle of One Hundred Years of Solitude! At first glance, it could work for any of the categories about army veterans, or for "Beautiful Mural in Warsaw Eats Up Smog, Purifying The Air Equal to 720 Trees" for the trees on the cover. I'll look more tomorrow!

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3271 comments I still have about 150 pages left of Thunderhead for tomorrow. Are there any rules around counting books started before the read-a-thon? I looked and didn't see anything, but it's very possible that I missed it.

message 11: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Joy. I’m really excited about the read-a-thon & our team. I’m reading The Heartbeat Of Wounded Knee: Native America From 1890 To Present by David Treuer. I’m pairing it with, New Mexico School Buys $2,800 of supplies for Navajo Nation After Year End Class Trip Is Canceled. Good Luck everyone.

Ok looking through the news articles, I'm going to use Behold the Dreamers for either the article about the dad's club launching an fundraiser for an immigrant family or for the students who go to court to see their teacher become a US citizen. Both would appeal, I think (hope) but I'll know more about which one to go with once I finish the book.... which will hopefully be today since I'm behind on my Goodreads challenge!

message 13: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments So far I am going to use Starsight (Skyward, #2) by Brandon Sanderson for the news story about the blind little boy who saw the stars for the first time because of the title. If I list some of my library books here could yall help maybe place them?

message 14: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11197 comments Mod
Definitely! I love the placement of that book, Heather!

message 15: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments I also have The Vanishing Stair (Truly Devious, #2) by Maureen Johnson Even If We Break by Marieke Nijkamp Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella If There's No Tomorrow by Jennifer L. Armentrout I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn Safe Harbour by Christina Kilbourne

Just the usual. At least 100 pages remaining at the start :)

message 17: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Question - I guess we google the news story to see how it would apply to the book? I still need help placing Dorothy Must Die. I like Laura's idea. I'm just making sure there isn't a better option.

The stories are linked in the list. You should be able to just go by the info there.

Heather | 236 comments I was looking at the spreadsheet and my name isn't added to the top to track my pages

Sorry, Heather, I just saw you were added. Welcome! Feel free to add your name!

I'm going to work on linking the stories onto the spreadsheet to make it easier for everyone. Give me a few minutes to get that done!

it's okay! Can someone explain to me the layout of the spreadsheet?

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11197 comments Mod
The top half is for recording pages read (1 audio minute = 1 page, if you do audiobooks). For every 1000 pages read, we get a wild card.

The bottom half is where you fill in the books you've completed. When you write how the book applies to the news article, it will automatically tally our points earned. (You can see the example I wrote on the Bee article)

So how do we use the planning section?

I envisioned people putting the name of the book at the top, then putting x's or explanations of how it would fit all of the various possible news stories, just to track what we have possibilities for and what news stories we are missing.

Could you set an example on that part of the spreadsheet too? I am a little confused on the layout of it and want to add Starsight!

message 26: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Hello everyone! My day has been non stop already. I am finally going to do some audiobook listening. I have no idea about placement of where my book or audiobook would fit in. I have 4 and a half hours left in A Little Thing Called Life by Linda Thompson. I will look tonight at all the articles. I will try to fit my book in too.

Finished Behold the Dreamers!! Clocked 176 pages and checked off the surprise fundraiser article with 9 points.

message 28: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Ahh, so a book can check off multiple connections for an article if applicable? Interesting.

I just checked my dad out of a rehab center for a broken hip so my reading (and life :)) is a bit in chaos but hoping to catch up a bit as he gets stronger each day. I got in a few good pages today at least.

Any suggestions for Zorba the Greek? Would the athlete trying for the Special Olympics work?

message 29: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments Hi everyone! I've added the book I'm reading, A Children's Bible, to the spreadsheet and I should finish it tomorrow as it's a relatively short read. I'm hoping to get a lot of reading done this week since I won't be visiting family for thanksgiving. Good luck to all!

Also, Emily, I really liked Behold the Dreamers when I read it, and it has stuck with me in the years since. I hope you enjoyed it.

message 30: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3271 comments Sorry I haven't checked in more. I had a full day of work from home today, and then a 2.5 hour long ordeal trying to order dinner (long story short, we ordered from DoorDash and then the app completely crashed, so we had no idea whether the order went through and couldn't get on to cancel it either).

On the plus side, I've been listening to the audiobook of Unfollow Me and I have about an hour left. It's late now, but I'm probably going to just stay up and finish it off anyway. I also read another 46 pages of Thunderhead. I'd been hoping to finish both books tonight, but the dinner ordeal kind of derailed everything.

message 31: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Hi all. I have 123 pages left in my book. My goal is still to finish today. I thought for sure yesterday I had read at least 100 pages but when I did the math it was only 81 pages. Very disappointing. I have a question that may of been asked. Do you have to read the articles or are we going just by the titles? If we have to read the articles how do we get to them? Sorry I need step by step instructions. It’s going to be in the 50’s here so a good day to read.

Good morning!!

Jen, yes the goal is to find a book that will connect to the articles in a variety of ways!

Sherri, you can find the links to the articles either in the Group Challenge Introduction thread or on the spreadsheet where they are linked. Ideally, you would pick an article that looks like it would fit then read it and see if we can make any other connections.

I'm starting The Space Between Worlds this morning, which should be a quick read. Just have to figure out where it will fit!

message 33: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments Good Morning everyone!!

I have about 2 hours left of Starsight then I will have to find another book that fits an article

message 34: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments Finished Starsight and started The Vanishing Stair

message 35: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments Good morning! I'm still plugging away at One Hundred Years of Solitude but I decided I don't want to rush it - I'm really enjoying spending my mornings in that strange, hazy world. So I started People of the Book last night so that I can keep up the pace!

message 36: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments I found a spot for The Vanishing Stair and I should finish it within the next few hours

You're on a roll, Heather!

I've gotten 140ish pages read of The Space Between Worlds, and I'm really glad for this Read-a-Thon because it is one that I probably would have stretched out for days if not for the push to read. A bit slow moving and has some gaping plot holes that I'm hoping will get filled by the end of the book.

message 38: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Afternoon Team Joy, I finished The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America From 1890 to Present by David Treuer. I put it on the spreadsheet. I'm going to take a break & do something else. My next book is Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy,Paternity, and Love by Dani Shapiro.

Oooooh I loved Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love! I was surprised because I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, but it was one of my favorite memoirs of the year.

Heather | 236 comments I'm finishing The Vanishing Stair now and will pick another one

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Hello all! I have finished my audiobook, A Little Thing Called Life by Linda Thompson. Now I have to find an article it fits. I will try to pick my next audiobook with the articles in mind. I am reading Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane, and it is slow going for me. I find it rather repetitive.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11197 comments Mod
I finished another book! Huzzah!

We currently have 6 books completed and another 2 wild cards earned, for a total of 8/50 news articles reached. Don't forget to update the spreadsheet with page counts!

message 43: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Just updated my pages and I did finish Zorba the Greek yesterday but still struggling as to where it would best fit...

message 44: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I didn't get to read today but I read 144 pages yesterday. I'll read a little before I go to bed.

message 45: by Rachel (last edited Nov 22, 2020 09:40PM) (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3271 comments I finished Thunderhead today (which I had started before the readathon, but had about 150 pages left by the time it started), and read the first 102 pages of The Toll.

Unfortunately, haven't had a chance to even begin to look at the articles yet to see where the two books I've completed so far fit in. They are Thunderhead and Unfollow Me. I was thinking Unfollow Me might fit the article about the sports team using social media, but I haven't had time to look at it in detail. If anyone wants to find a place to fit these in, please feel free! I'm working 9-5 tomorrow, so I probably won't have a chance to look until late in the evening.

Also, how am I supposed to log audio hours on the spreadsheet? I saw in another thread that it's counted as 1 page per minute, but that seems a bit weird to me. The 9 hour audiobook I listened to yesterday would work out to 540 pages, even though the book physically would be only 350 pages. It feels a bit weird to count it for almost double the length. I put in my page count for today, but I'll hold off on yesterday's until I know what to do.

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Joy. I volunteer at our library 4 hours this morning so will read this afternoon. I’m liking Inheritance A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love by Dani Shapiro. It not a long book but probably won’t finish it till Tuesday.

Good morning!

Jen K, looks like you could put it under the splitting the lottery with a friend article, since it seems like a major theme of the book was friendship?

Rachel, the 1 minute = 1 page rule is just to keep things simple and keep us from having to work out calculations. So you can go ahead and count it like that.

I'm starting Gemina after having read Illuminae earlier this month. It should be a really quick read, but high in page numbers since it's written in memos and letters and chats. Hoping I can finish it by Thursday!

message 48: by Heather (new)

Heather | 236 comments I am reading The Storm Crow right now and also started Love Your Life to fit in the Italy story!

That's a great series, Emily! I didn't love the later entries as much as the first one but that's mainly because I like the first one so much. Perfect choice for a read-a-thon!
