Winter20 Read-a-Thon: Team Joy
Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
An explanation:
You can record your page count at the top portion of the Tracking tab on the spreadsheet. Every audiobook minute counts as one page.
On the second half, you can put the book title and who read it, and then how it fits for the prompts. It should automatically tabulate the points you earned for each book! Please only post completed books on the Tracking tab!
You can use the planning tab to plan how your books will fit the news articles. Feel free to adjust this tab to fit your group's preferences.

Yay Team Joy! So excited to really join a team this go round and give it my all.
I'm off this week from work and I have a lot of self-care planned (ahem, bubble baths and reading) so hopefully I get through at least 3 books.

I'm really happy for you, Emily! I'm sure that trying to teach in 2020 has earned you plenty of self care time <3

I'm reading Dorothy Must Die. I'm trying to figure out the game and what category it might fit in. I'm not being imaginative enough right now I think.
I'm also planning to read some graphic novels:
Mooncakes
Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale
They are both over 200 pages.
I'm hoping to get through 3 of the Dorothy Must Die books. Books 2 and 3 are:
The Wicked Will Rise
Yellow Brick War
Can't wait to see how it all works.
At first glance, I would count that for "Man Opens Up His Home to Shelter 300 Dogs From a Hurricane" since they both involve a natural disaster but you might be able to find another that has more connections.
I'm smack in the middle of Behold the Dreamers, but my brain is too mushy to look at words right now lol. I'll slot it in for potential categories tomorrow, although I do hope to finish it by tomorrow after... it's so good!

Ok looking through the news articles, I'm going to use Behold the Dreamers for either the article about the dad's club launching an fundraiser for an immigrant family or for the students who go to court to see their teacher become a US citizen. Both would appeal, I think (hope) but I'll know more about which one to go with once I finish the book.... which will hopefully be today since I'm behind on my Goodreads challenge!

Just the usual. At least 100 pages remaining at the start :)

Sorry, Heather, I just saw you were added. Welcome! Feel free to add your name!
I'm going to work on linking the stories onto the spreadsheet to make it easier for everyone. Give me a few minutes to get that done!

it's okay! Can someone explain to me the layout of the spreadsheet?
The top half is for recording pages read (1 audio minute = 1 page, if you do audiobooks). For every 1000 pages read, we get a wild card.
The bottom half is where you fill in the books you've completed. When you write how the book applies to the news article, it will automatically tally our points earned. (You can see the example I wrote on the Bee article)

So how do we use the planning section?
I envisioned people putting the name of the book at the top, then putting x's or explanations of how it would fit all of the various possible news stories, just to track what we have possibilities for and what news stories we are missing.

Could you set an example on that part of the spreadsheet too? I am a little confused on the layout of it and want to add Starsight!

Finished Behold the Dreamers!! Clocked 176 pages and checked off the surprise fundraiser article with 9 points.

I just checked my dad out of a rehab center for a broken hip so my reading (and life :)) is a bit in chaos but hoping to catch up a bit as he gets stronger each day. I got in a few good pages today at least.
Any suggestions for Zorba the Greek? Would the athlete trying for the Special Olympics work?

Also, Emily, I really liked Behold the Dreamers when I read it, and it has stuck with me in the years since. I hope you enjoyed it.

On the plus side, I've been listening to the audiobook of Unfollow Me and I have about an hour left. It's late now, but I'm probably going to just stay up and finish it off anyway. I also read another 46 pages of Thunderhead. I'd been hoping to finish both books tonight, but the dinner ordeal kind of derailed everything.

Good morning!!
Jen, yes the goal is to find a book that will connect to the articles in a variety of ways!
Sherri, you can find the links to the articles either in the Group Challenge Introduction thread or on the spreadsheet where they are linked. Ideally, you would pick an article that looks like it would fit then read it and see if we can make any other connections.
I'm starting The Space Between Worlds this morning, which should be a quick read. Just have to figure out where it will fit!

I have about 2 hours left of Starsight then I will have to find another book that fits an article

You're on a roll, Heather!
I've gotten 140ish pages read of The Space Between Worlds, and I'm really glad for this Read-a-Thon because it is one that I probably would have stretched out for days if not for the push to read. A bit slow moving and has some gaping plot holes that I'm hoping will get filled by the end of the book.

Oooooh I loved Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love! I was surprised because I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, but it was one of my favorite memoirs of the year.

I finished another book! Huzzah!
We currently have 6 books completed and another 2 wild cards earned, for a total of 8/50 news articles reached. Don't forget to update the spreadsheet with page counts!

Unfortunately, haven't had a chance to even begin to look at the articles yet to see where the two books I've completed so far fit in. They are Thunderhead and Unfollow Me. I was thinking Unfollow Me might fit the article about the sports team using social media, but I haven't had time to look at it in detail. If anyone wants to find a place to fit these in, please feel free! I'm working 9-5 tomorrow, so I probably won't have a chance to look until late in the evening.
Also, how am I supposed to log audio hours on the spreadsheet? I saw in another thread that it's counted as 1 page per minute, but that seems a bit weird to me. The 9 hour audiobook I listened to yesterday would work out to 540 pages, even though the book physically would be only 350 pages. It feels a bit weird to count it for almost double the length. I put in my page count for today, but I'll hold off on yesterday's until I know what to do.

Good morning!
Jen K, looks like you could put it under the splitting the lottery with a friend article, since it seems like a major theme of the book was friendship?
Rachel, the 1 minute = 1 page rule is just to keep things simple and keep us from having to work out calculations. So you can go ahead and count it like that.
I'm starting Gemina after having read Illuminae earlier this month. It should be a really quick read, but high in page numbers since it's written in memos and letters and chats. Hoping I can finish it by Thursday!

That's a great series, Emily! I didn't love the later entries as much as the first one but that's mainly because I like the first one so much. Perfect choice for a read-a-thon!
