So I've forgotten this book that is possibly supernatural, mostly takes place in the ocean, has advanced technology, in the future, and I think there's this algae in there that can cure or save something. I read it around 2018. The main character ARE humans. An injection that gives humans gills. I'm thinking of more details. Is a series of books. Mother of main character dies very early in book. (Chapter 1-3)
