Always adding new books to your to-read list and then they stay there for years? Not this time! For this prompt we're reading something published in 2021.

Listopia: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Optional Questions:
1. What are you reading this week?
2. Have you read other books by this author?
3. What other 2021 releases are on your to-read list?

message 2: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Holly Jackson has a new one out I believe?

message 3: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I am definitely going to read The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah, she's one of my favorite authors.

I didn't really know of any other books coming out next year, so I did some searching, and my TBR list just grew. I'm looking forward to:

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Those Who Run Towards Fire (Beartown #3!) by Fredrik Backman
The Hidden Palace (Golem and Jinni #2!) by Helene Wecker

And maybe Neil Gaiman will finally publish The Seven Sisters, the sequel to Neverwhere, but I'm not holding my breath.

message 4: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments I don't usually keep up with new releases but I read somewhere that Gillian Flynn is due to publish a Hamlet retelling in 2021 as part of the Hogarth series. This will definitely be my pick if it's released next year!

message 5: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3308 comments I'm looking forward to reading The Women of Chateau Lafayette by Stephanie Dray, since I enjoyed her other historical fiction books.

Another 2021 release that looks good to me is The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly. It's another historical fiction novel.

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner looks good also. From the description, it might fit the "female villain" prompt:

In this addictive and spectacularly imagined debut, a female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them—setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course

message 6: by Kristina (last edited Nov 03, 2020 06:56PM) (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I'll most likely read whatever Book of the Month book I pick of January or February for this prompt, but I have a quite a few books on my radar so far that will be published in the first half of next year:

Detransition, Baby
We Could Be Heroes
Milk Blood Heat
The Project
The Gilded Ones
The Echo Wife
Honey Girl
Klara and the Sun
The Descent of the Drowned
The Dictionary of Lost Words
Ariadne
The Rock Eaters: Stories
A Master of Djinn
The Lights of Prague
The Hidden Palace (The Golem and the Jinni #2!!)

I have The Lost Apothecary for female villain, so I hope other people pick it up here or in other prompts!

Beth wrote: "I don't usually keep up with new releases but I read somewhere that Gillian Flynn is due to publish a Hamlet retelling in 2021 as part of the Hogarth series. This will definitely be my pick if it's..."

Beth one of my goals for 2021 is to read this Hamlet retelling if it comes out! I have two other options slotted here but would bump them for Hamlet Hogarth.

Right now I have Revival Season: A Novel and Project Hail Mary slotted in here since I have ARCs of both. I also thought about The Heiress: The Revelations of Anne de Bourgh because I love reading Pride and Prejudice retellings/extensions (although rarely find them satisfying), but I moved that to book with flowers/greenery.

I'm also interested in these titles that I haven't worked into my plan yet:

Wings of Ebony
Wild Women and the Blues
The Prophets
The Shape of Darkness
The Rock Eaters: Stories

message 8: by Alicia (last edited Nov 03, 2020 08:33PM) (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I know this is one of the more "basic" prompts, but I like to hold this for any exciting new releases!

I'm also most excited for this thread. I love finding exciting new releases.

Just looking at my current TBR this is what I have as coming out next year:

Sarah J Maas' sequel Untitled to House of Earth and Blood
A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
Written in Starlight by Isabel Ibanez
The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo
Grace and Glory by Jennifer Armentrout
The Demon Tide, book 4 of the Black Witch Series by Laurie Forest
Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price
The Russian Cage by Charlaine Harris
A Vow So Bold and Deadly by Brigid Kemmerer
Cast in Firelight by Dad Swift

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Thomas wrote: "Holly Jackson has a new one out I believe?"

She's doing a short book for World Book Day (a prequel story to a Good Girl's Guide to Murder). She probably has the third novel out next year but I think she's still writing it, so dates could slip.

message 10: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I've got over 100 2021 releases on my wishlist already, so no shortage of options!

Entropia | 283 comments Today I found out that the guy who wrote one of my fav books from last challenge will be releasing new one in 2021 - The Sacred Band: Three Hundred Theban Lovers Fighting to Save Greek Freedom :3 I hope that Püha ja õudne lõhn will finally get English translation in 2021. Other than that I might read A Desolation Called Peace, but I wasn't impressed with first part.

message 16: by Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) (last edited Jan 02, 2021 09:23AM) (new)

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) I started off my reading year with a digital ARC of In Love & Pajamas: A Collection of Comics about Being Yourself Together, so I've checked off this prompt already! I love the Catana webcomics, and have read every collection published so far. It was really a great lighthearted way to kick off my reading year.

I will also likely read these 2021 releases at some point:

Project Hail Mary
The Survivors
This Beautiful Truth: How God's Goodness Breaks Into Our Darkness
Fault Lines: The Social Justice Movement and Evangelicalism's Looming Catastrophe

Edited to add: Ooh, I forgot about this one, but I'm really looking forward to it: Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses

message 17: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleym99) I got an early release of The Wife Upstairs, which will be published in 2021. I just finished it and as it has a 2021 publication date, it does fit this. I have not read any other books from the author. I do have about 5 other books on my TBR list with a 2021 publication date, and one of these I already purchased and should have shortly.

message 18: by NancyJ (last edited Jan 02, 2021 07:28PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments I'm shooting for 21 books published in 2021. (I read 20 2020 books last year.)

So far these look like possibilities:

50. A book published in 2021
A Splendid Ruin - have
We Run the Tides - have

The Last Garden in EnglandLand of Big Numbers
Good Neighbors
Milk Fed
How Beautiful We Were - Africa
The Songbook of Benny Lament - Amy Harmon
The Hidden Palace (Golem & Jinny #2)
The Bombay Prince - Sujata Massey

I haven't gotten around to checking out netgalley for ARCs, but I've been pretty lucky with goodreads giveaways. I got some really great books early last year - Dear Edward was a favorite.

I'm reading this book right now. I was going to use it for this prompt as well, but I was having trouble finding something for the Sound of Music prompt, so I plugged it into that one. I figured it would be easier to find 2021 books that I want to read! :) I have read the whole series this year. I'm really enjoying it.

message 24: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 101 comments Every year I have the same problem with this one.
What publishing date do you go by?

Does only the first original publishing in the original language count?
The first in your country or language?
The first edition of a format (audio, ebook etc.)?

With the English-centric book market, I guess this is more a problem for people in non English speaking countries.
I am in Germany and not a big fan of German Literature/writers in general so most of my books do not come through my hands in the first months of the original publishing and I struggle with this prompt every year.

How does everyone else see this?

In this situation, I would go for the date published in the language you are reading it in. If I was reading a book originally published in another language that was published in English in 2021, I'd count the 2021 date even if the original was published years before.

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I read Our Country Friends by Gary Shteyngart. This book was so fun, about a group of eight friends quarantining together at a bungalow colony in Upstate NY. As one of the first novels set against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, it's an engrossing (and amusing) tale of love, loss and enduring friendship. Other 2021 books I'm looking forward to are The Four Winds, The Lincoln Highway, Sparks Like Stars, Let Me Tell You What I Mean, Yearbook, Sure, I'll Be Your Black Friend: Notes from the Other Side of the Fist Bump, Whereabouts and Taste: My Life through Food.
