NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 7 comments The Sympathizer - excellent writing, Vietnam.

I had a short story theme this month and read many collections. They were all well written, inventive, and insightful, but often bleak or scary. All 4 stars for different reasons.
Her Body and Other Parties, by Machado, 4 stars. Some interesting psychology.
Things We Lost in the Fire, by Mariana Enriquez, 4 stars. From Argentina, with interesting themes and more horror than I usually like.
Love of Lifeby Jack London, 4 stars. circa 1900 goldrush (Call of the Wild)
Runaway by Alice Munro. 3.5 stars. 1960s- on.

Currently reading:
The King Is Always Above the People: Stories - Peru. Similar to Things we lost in the fire, but from a male point of view.
Mouthful of Birds - Literary horror, with plenty of gross-out moments. I won't finish it.

I was mesmerized by The Vanished Birds. It was intense and sometimes difficult, but worth it. I put We Begin at the End on my to-read-in-2021 list, and promptly forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder.

message 283: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah Finished The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil, #1) by Soman Chainani - unfortunately this was too simplistic in outlook for me. Pity as it had such good potential.

I am a multiple book reader. My current reads are The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey - thoroughly enjoying
Spit and Song (Ustlian Tales #2) by Travis M. Riddle - hoping this ends up shining as it has morally grey characters and I am struggling
Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton - started and stopped a few years ago. Picked it up as a punishment, but I am quite enjoying this.
