I read this book sometime between 2010 and now, and the third book in the trilogy still wasn't out. There was something about the girls being ranked by how well they did and this was shown by the color of their dresses.
It is NOT the selection series.

They're late teenage years, from what I remember. And I'm not sure if it was set in our world, but I know part of the plot was that they had to travel overseas, maybe from England to America? It was not true historical fiction, but the atmosphere was a lot like a fusion of the past and present, with the girls wearing gowns and the going to balls that the community was a part of. The three books all covered the sameish time frame, it just switched whose perspective the story was from (so they all started and ended in the same spot)
