My niece and I began reading this last year 2019 and it seemed like a current book. It was about a young latina girl who lived in NYC , i believe it's the Bronx. She was really good at drawing, especially birds. there was a tree outside her apartment that she could relate to because of it's solitary nature. A new girl came to the school whom she connected with. The girl was goth/punk and different than her, more extrovert. that's all I remember as we never got to finish the book and cannot find it.
